Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Abberton & District CC (Prelim. Round) on Sun 11 Apr 2021 at 13:00
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 80 runs

Match report With league and cup campaigns abandoned due to COVID in 2020, it was a welcome return to competitive action at Pheasant Park, as WMCC hosted Two Counties side Abberton at the Pheasantry in the National Village Cup (NVC). That the game was played at home at all so early in the summer is a credit to the sterling work of Nathan Hayman. On Grand National weekend, the going was good to soft, with the strip playing well throughout, typical April fare at Woodham.

Early wickets for the skipper were welcome and reduced the visitors to 17-2, though less welcome was the early shoulder picked up by Roger Marshall, stretching an already small seam attack to the limit. After a brief period of stability sharp work on the boundary by Pete Harness, and some slightly fortuitous work from Gav Cook saw Schofield short of his ground, 45-3 and the game nicely poised. A crucial partnership then ensued, as opener Bowles and skipper Sullivan batted sensibly, accumulating before accelerating beyond 150. The introduction of Angus Beames, making his bow for the 1's and in the NVC finally earnt the breakthrough, a more than controlled and useful spell, Sullivan dragging on for a well made 50.

Bowles continued, and put the home attack to the sword, deservedly reached three figures, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 129, as Abberton posted an above par 222 (a Richie Benaud favourite).

With restrictions in place, tea was taken in various backs of cars and rugs, al fresco dining in some light snow showers the epitomy of April weather!

The run chase commence well, as Dan Smith and Andy Brown reunited on the cricket field again, gave the reply a solid base. The duo produced a 50 run partnership, and were at the mid-point of another when Dan skied a Booker delivery to Moxon, who took the catch. One soon became two as Browny departed just after the sanitiser/drinks break, as 77-0 swiftly became 77-2, as Jack Shipton and Pete Harness joined forces and continued the good work of the opening pair. However, when both departed (for 12 and 18 respectively) the game soon ebbed away from the hosts, as new batsmen were unable to get going as only Angus, who enjoyed a good debut, made double figures from the lower half of the order, with WMCC still some 80 runs shy of the target.

So, the journey on the road to Lords has fallen at the first hurdle, but a more than useful outing for many players that have not donned the whites for so long - and will no doubt be feeling it over the coming days! The team battled away well against a v. capable side - and we wish Abberton well in future rounds of the competition.

There is now a three week break for the 1's - until we return to action, against at Pheasant Park as we host Writtle - breaking new ground in Division One of the T-Rippon - for the very first time.

Until then..
