Roding Valley CC 2nd XI v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 22 May 2021 at 13:30
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 4 wkts
Match report
The 1's finally returned to action following two consecutive washouts with a trip to Blackmore Sports Ground, home to Roding Valley 2nd XI. With the match talked about Friends Reunion this week, I think it is fair to file this as the one that got away.
With two football matches taking place on parts of the outfield there was a delay to the match, eventually starting at 1.45 - reduced to 40 overs per side.
Invited to bat on a soft, uncovered wicket, WMCC started solidly enough, with openers Dan Smith and Andrew Brown putting on a stand of 53 for the first wicket in 12 overs. Misfortune was to strike however, as both Dan (35) and Craig Platt fell in the same over, both playing on to the bowling of Chowdry as the strip started to cut up. Scoring became harder, and at drinks, the visitors were 68-3, Browny (9) the third wicket to fall.
No-one could truly get themselves in, and this was reflected in the scorecard, as starts for Damian Abeyratna (23), Manoj Tripathi (13) and Pete Harness (9) were curtailed as wickets fell at regular intervals. Nevertheless, progress to 150 was steadily being made. A late partnership from Toby Pateman (23) and Kev Wright (17*) helped to achieve a minor milestone, as 151-9 was eventually posted. A more than competitive score on a tricky surface.
The runs of the board looked very good when the hosts were soon reduced to 30-4, as the skipper with three and Toby with one, aided by a catch of the season contender by Craig, a brilliant effort, running back to take a steepling catch over his shoulder.
Unfortunately, the advantage wasn't able to be pressed home, as Azman, supported by Ratkumar combined to provide the best partnership of the match. At drinks, Roding Valley were 87-4 and well on their way to the target.
Eventually, the partnership was broken, as Manu got one to stop on Azman, who chipped straight to Dan at short cover, who made no mistake. Ratkumar continued to show stickability and helped to reduce the target to 30. It was Manu again that dismissed the hosts no 6 - trapping him in front for 23. 120-6, though 10 left to play, the home side still had the advantage.
Despite best endeavours, a couple of late chances were put down, and Chowdry and Miah gradually began to take their side home - and in the 37th over, they made it, Chowdry finishing unbeaten on 15, Miah on 20.
Definitely a case of what could have been, after posting a competitive total on a difficult surface and picking up four early wickets to hold the advantage which we could not press home. However, it had been such a truncated start that early season rustiness is understandable.
Hopefully the weather will improve significantly in the coming weeks so we can get a run of games under our belts. Next up, we entertain Ilford Catholics at the Pheasantry, and hopefully a swift return to winning ways.
Until next week...
