Rayleigh Fairview 1st v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 12 Aug 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 43 runs
Match report
The 1's returned to the summit in Division 3 with a hard fought victory at league leaders Rayleigh Fairview.
Losing the toss and asked to bat first, regular opening pair Rod Brazier & Andy Smith were reunited, and provided the ideal platform that was needed in an opening stand of 73, ended when Rod (21) nicked behind to 'keeper Ames. Still Andy was nearing 50, and duly converted, as he and Dan Smith continued to make the home attack toil, as they took the 1's to three figures and beyond. Andy eventually fell for a fine 66, as fluid an innings as he has played this season - most timely.
Manoj arrived at the crease seeking quick runs, but picked the wrong fielder to attempt a quick single, Lawson and Ames combining to see the 1's no 4 depart for 5. Nevertheless 146-3 from 31 overs represented an excellent position - and when Dan was joined by Toby Pateman, the scales tipped further in the balance of the visitors. For the third time in the innings, a partnership in excess of 50 was produced, with Dan going beyond that same landmark in the process. For the first time this season he was unable to convert to three figures, falling just 14 short, but 86 from 59 balls was a huge contribution.
Toby continued his good form and remained unbeaten on 36 at the close, and despite losing Jack Shipton late on, the 1's posted an imposing 245.
A couple of early wickets helped the visitors cause in the reply, the first, a fine catch from George Verlander at mid-off, the second a more regulation affair for the safe hands of Craig Marshall. 31-2.
And then the wickets dried up, as opener Compton and McLean dug in, with a mixture of composed batting and some chancing of arm built up a steady partnership. Whilst only ever yielding a run-rate of around four an over, it was nevertheless a solid base from which the hosts could build their run chase.
Finally, with the partnership approaching 100, George got one through the defences of Compton (55). The introduction of Dan then accounted for the other half-centurion, McLean (54). Wickets were now coming in twos, and Dan picked up both - Ames well caught by Rod at cover, and the skipper taking the simplest chances at slip. 149-6 and the hosts needing 9 an over, the game looked done.
Collins had other ideas, and counter-attacked well in an enterprising innings that could threaten the outcome of the match. When he reached 39, he tried one big hit too many, Jack taking an excellent catch running round from long-off, clutching the chance at the fifth attempt. A fourth victim for Dan and a crucial wicket.
Still, three wickets remained to claim all 26 points. John returned to the fray to bowl Faires (0) and Page (8), caught at short mid-wicket by the skipper at the third time of asking.
The hosts were closing in on 200, and an extra bonus point, which they duly earnt as Petit clipped on the fine leg boundary for four. So, one ball to go, one more wicket needed. The field closed in and Petit squeezed one to backward square leg. A comfortable single inexplicably turned into a mix-up in running two - as a combination of Craig's accurate arm, and Toby's awareness to both catch the incoming ball, and with unerring accuracy throw down the stumps from two yards got the final wicket that the visitors sought, Rayleigh all out for 202.
An excellent victory that sees the 1's back at the top of tree, albeit by the narrowest of 3 point margins. Three games to go, and a chance to secure promotion to Div 2 at Pheasant Park next week, as we host third placed Galleywood, themselves in good form.
Until next week...
