Rod Brazier profile

  • Rod "Tortoise" Brazier

  • The man with the upside-down head. 

    No one is quite certain why this name was coined however I can reveal how. In the summer of 2015 when, in a match against Little Baddow, an elderly gentleman trundled down the track and lay into our Rodders after hearing him bully the young opposing batsman. "Give me a catch mate and I'll buy you a pint", I believe is what Rodder's bullying consisted off, that rascal - knowing full well the lad was underage and that he had conveniently misplaced his wallet before catching a lift with someone before coming to the game.  Brazier likes nothing more than getting under the skin of the opposition. Taunts from deep extra cover are a weekly ritual from our Rodders, who knows full well he is close enough for them to hear the jeering but far away enough for them to hit him if they should so happen to launch their bats in his general direction. But our very own Rod has earn't his crust among our pack, and when you can hit centuries for fun, no matter how slowly, you are a welcome addition indeed. Perhaps what is more unbelievable than this man’s batting prowess is the fact that on numerous occasions during the 2016 season he fell short of getting a half-century. So much so was this odd occurrence that rumours began to spread that Rod was doing it on purpose. Rod assures me that the straight ball he left on middle stump was way outside the off after its delivery – and that it had bewildered him how quickly it had zipped in and clipped the bails, causing him much dismay at the realisation that he wouldn’t be able to buy the lads a jug after the game.
