Broomfield 1st v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 06 May 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 43 runs
Match report
After last weeks dalliance with the National Village Cup, the 1's season got underway in earnest with a trip to Broomfield.
Retaining the same side from the previous week, the visitors lost the toss and were asked to bat first on what looked a good deck.
Despite the early loss of Rod Brazier (6), the Smith twins, Andy & Dan settled in and looked largely untroubled during a stand that grew and grew throughout the innings, with the boundary found with regularity. At drinks, the visitors were 111-1 with both batsman closing in on half-centuries.
Biffta was the first to reach the milestone, his first in the league in Woodham colours and proceeded to press the accelerator. Andy wasn't too far behind in raising his bat too, much to the delight of visiting Brad Saunders, whose pre-match motivation had paid off.
The partnership kept climbing, well beyond 150 and toward 200 - get the record books out folks! Biffta deservedly reached his century, the first of many to come, for a superb innings of placement, power and control.
The 1's looked on for a big score with 200 on the board and 10 overs to go. Once the score passed 200, and Farrow was introduced into the bowling attack, the combination had an alarming effect for the visitors, as so often happens when a big partnership ends.
Farrow accounted for Andy (66) to finally end a superb 186 partnership. Biffta (106) followed shortly after, holing out to long on when set for a huge hundred. And so the wickets continued to tumble, in fact 206-1 soon became 208-6 as Farrow made inroads into the middle order. A trio of Marshalls and one Wright did halt the slide a little, and in so doing pushed the score up to 244-8 at the close, Farrow finishing on 5-14 from 7.
A good start was required in the reply and the visitors were on top in the early exchanges as the first four overs did not yield a run. The skipper and GV bowled well and continued to keep the openers in check as both bowled their 10 overs off the reel. GV struck twice during his spell, first trapping Lynn in front for 15, then getting the key wicket of Turner - caught and bowled for 41 - as GV showed a surprising turn of pace to claim. 63-2 from 20 overs, a good first half for the 1's.
Craig, despite struggling with a dodgy ankle, actually found life easier by coming off a shorter run, and accounted for Macintosh (10) - another caught and bowled but without the drama or the athleticism of the previous one. Craig picked up two further wickets, both well taken catches from Jack Shipton stationed at a deepish mid-on.
When Lynn had his stumps knocked back by Roger, at 118-6 the hosts looked a long way short. However enterprising knocks from Picking and Farrow threatened to turn the tide. To achieve victory was a tall order - and it took some fancy footwork from Craig to run out Farrow (28) to end a partnership of 61.
The game effectively ended as a contest as Picking (41) become Roger's second victim. With overs running out and just one wicket needed to claim maximum points, Roger struck again, bowling Deacon for 2 to end the hosts chase on 201.
A tremendous start to the 2017 season with maximum points claimed against good opposition. Off and running....
Next up - we host Great Baddow at the Pheasantry.
