Epping Foresters CC 1st XI v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 13:00
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 3 wkts

Match report A second successive half-century from Jack Shipton, a first 5-fer of the campaign for Roger Marshall and a catch of the season contender from Ollie Glasson were the highlights as the 1's returned to winning ways with a 3 wicket win at Epping Foresters.

An idyllic setting in amongst the forest, with the hum of the M25 below, the ground had seen its fair share of rain on Friday. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked like a slow surface.

Scoring was difficult and the slow nature of the pitch accounted for the first wicket of the match, Billington playing too early on a Kev Wright delivery to be bowled for 13. Home skipper Poole joined Fitzgibbon and once they adjusted to the pace (or lack of) of the pitch they began to find runs a little easier to come by, Poole particularly. However, with change bowlers George Verlander and Manoj Tripathi bowling tidily, the run-rate remained at 3 an over. George removed Fitzgibbon for 18 and Manu snared Poole just before drinks break, as he picked out Ollie Glasson perfectly on the boundary, who ran in to take an excellent catch.

McGuinness and Halls, as others before them, played steadily, taking the score beyond three figures. The introduction of Roger Marshall proved key, and the contrast of speed with the spin of Ollie at the other end, started to have a positive impact on the innings for the visitors, though it took a moment of brilliance to separate the pair, as Ollie, close to the boundary and with the ball seemingly going over his head, managed to get a hand to the ball, keeping it alive, before clinging on to the rebound just before the ball hit the floor - superb. Not to be outdone, Manu then produced an excellent catch of his own, taking a one-handed effort at gully, the barest of margins above the ground. Buoyed by these successes, Rog continued to pick up further wickets, eventually completing a first five wicket haul of the season, finishing with 5-25. A wicket for Toby Pateman near the end of the innings helped to reduce the hosts to 9 down, but a late flury of runs propelled the total up to a reasonable, but chaseable 172-9 at the close.

As with the match last week, the standout performers were once again Dan Smith and Jack Shipton. Dan was in full flow very quickly, and despite the losses of Andrew Brown and Craig Platt, 36-2 from 6 overs was a stellar start. Jack picked up from a week ago, and the pair put the home bowlers to the sword as the heat continued to beat down. The pair delivered a 50 partnership in quick time, though, as was the case in the last match, just as Dan was approaching 50, he became the third wicket to fall, picking out Peck on the mid-wicket boundary, to depart for 47.

There was time for a Woodham wobble, as 94-2 soon became 106-5. Though with 24 overs still remaining, it was wickets and not time that was the key factor and the flying start had enabled the 1's to patiently rebuild. Toby joined Jack to do just that, and steadied the ship. It was great to see Jack raise his bat for the second Saturday running, though he was next to fall, trapped leg before by McGuinness, who bowled tidily throughout. 132-6. Still 41 to go, but with 18 overs left, steady heads were required to see us home. Step forward Nigel Costin, playing his last match of the season before his operation, to provide the needed nous and calm. Slowly but surely, the winning post came closer into view, though with 17 needed, Toby (19) managed to find long-on - however, much of the hard work had already been done.

It was left to the skipper (14*) , who teamed up with Nigel (14*) to secure victory, the winning boundary (albeit streaky) achieving an extra point, a win by 3 wkts, with 6 overs remaining.

Great to get back to winning ways and a good all round team performance that helped to achieve the victory, a collective bowling effort which showed the depth that we do possess in the bowling ranks, backed up by good ground fielding (particularly from those boundary raiders able to move!) and a couple of sublime catches. Another good performance in the run chase too, again demonstrating the batting depth, which will no doubt be called upon throughout the season.

The biggest challenges are yet to come, and next week we entertain early pacesetters Basildon and Pitsea to Pheasant Park.

Until then...
