Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Ilford Catholic CC 1st XI on Sat 29 May 2021 at 13:00
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 4 wkts

Match report A league best 77 not out from Jack Shipton was the highlight as the 1's entertained Ilford Catholics at a sun drenched Pheasant Park. Despite the notable uplift in playing conditions compared to the rest of May, it was unfortunately a four wicket defeat that was suffered by WMCC for the second game running.

Losing the toss and asked to bat, the home side lost an early wicket, as Craig Platt was deceived by the early season low bounce, Thiru with the breakthrough. This brought regular opening pairing Dan Smith, finally free of Chelmsford traffic, to team up with Andrew Brown. Progress was steady against the stream of left-arm bowlers, as the pair produced another 50 partnership. At the 15 over drinks break the home side were well placed on 62-1. The introduction of Jignesh provided a positive change for the visitors, as he found appreciable turn and effectively tied up an end, bowling very economically (1-13) in his eight over spell. In eleven post drinks overs, just 22 were scored and crucially three wickets fell as Browny (25), Biff (46) and Abey (0) all returned to the pavilion.

Shippo and Manu steadied the ship and at the second drinks break (30 overs), WMCC stood on 97-4 and needed a good final 15 to post a challenging total. The accelerator was pushed, more so from Jack as the aggressor as Manu provided an ideal foil as the pair sought to wrestle control of the game. A second fifty partnership of the innings was secured as the 1's closed in on 150 with five overs to go. Despite the departure of Manu (20), Jack continued to assert authority over the visitors attack, bringing up his own 50 in the process, an excellent knock. He continued to take the attack to Ilford, and by the close had reached an unbeaten 77, as the 1's posted a v. reasonable 187-6, doubling up from the 30 over mark, which was impressive.

The chase started well, with Ruhul in attacking mood, punishing the all took frequent loose deliveries that came his way. Progress was checked ahead of the first drinks break, as Kev Wright picked up the wickets of Lewis and Mulholland, Ilford in a not too dissimilar position to WMCC at the 15 over mark, total standing at 57-2. On 65, two became three, as Manu demonstrated his prowess in accurate throwing from the boundary - a direct hit as the batsmen sought to claim a third run. The dangerman Ruhul remained and together with Manoj, they started to forge another good partnership in the middle overs.

Ruhul deservedly brought up his 50, but George Verlander achieved a key breakthrough, clean bowling the opener for 55. 87-4, game back in the balance and eerily mirroring the Woodham innings, though some quick runs from Manoj took the visitors to three figures, 112-4 at the final drinks break. 66 to win from 15 the equation.

Two quick wickets post drinks swung the pendulum back in the hosts favour, as George again and Roger Marshall struck to reduce Ilford to 115-6. Though with Manoj well set, an able partner was needed, and it was duly found in the shape of Thiru. The two left-handers took advantage of any loose deliveries and four big overs after the fall of the sixth wicket tilted the game back toward the visitors - as they quickly moved from 112 in the 32nd to 150 by the 36th.

Despite best endeavours, the pair were unable to be separated, and took the visitors to victory, with four wickets and four overs remaining to reach their target.

Again another tight match where the outcome could have been different. It is certainly telling at this level that teams do bat deeper, a lesson to be learnt there. Positives were again a decent batting display with a good score on a testing strip, with the notable highlight the outstanding 77 (from just 63 balls) from Shippo.

We go again next Saturday - this time with the longest trip of the season, to Epping Forresters, where we hope to return to winning ways.

Until then..
