Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Writtle CC 1st XI on Sat 01 May 2021 at 13:00
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 2 wkts

Match report The 1's made history as they made their bow in Division One of the T-Rippon for the first time.

The team showed one addition following activity in the transfer market, with Craig Platt joining the fray, and from the showing on day one will be an excellent signing for the club.

Winning the toss and electing to field first, early inroads were made into the Writtle top order, with the visitors soon in all sorts of trouble on 12-4 as Kev Wright and Toby Pateman were in the ascendancy with the ball swinging. Wickets included a sharp take behind the sticks from Dan Smith, deputising for the absent Nigel Costin - who it was great to see at the game supporting the side. Visiting skipper Adams was losing partners all around him, but kept his head to hold things together and start to work on a recovery, even if the run-rate was barely moving. Adams survived a scare, as he nicked a ball from Damian Abeyratna, though unfortunately Manoj Tripathi could not quite hold on to a sharp chance at slip.

Adams used this good fortune to his advantage and with some resistance found at the other end, together with the old foe Eddie Extra, started to make some progress. The skipper managed to remove Koimuttan just before concluding an economical spell of 10-7-7-4 to leave the visitors 5 down in the 20th. I'd recommend the Moderna vaccine on the Friday before the game..

Matt (15) provided some support to Adams, who would eventually pass 50, though was removed by the spinning George Verlander. Manoj finally ended the vigil of Adams for 58, as wickets again started to fall more regularly, though the total had edged beyond three figures and towards a first batting point. There was still time for Manoj to pick up another couple of wickets, with another blow attempted by Pradeja (13) but only succeeeding in skying to Jack Shipton, who took a fine catch in the deep to end the innings on 145.

After some al fresco dining at tea, the reply did not start in expected fashion, as Dan dragged on a delivery from Pradeja. 0-1 soon became 17-3, as Pradeja's inswingers accounted for Andrew Brown (3) and Damian without score.

Crucially, when a partnership was needed, it was duly provided, as Craig and Jack clawed our way back into the game, scoring at a decent rate too. The pair had put on 50, and looked set for more, until the missile from Jack was superbly caught by Adams in the covers, departing for 22. As so often happens, the next wicket was not long in falling, Craig caught low down at gully off the bowling of Matt for a well made 26. When Manoj was removed shortly after by the same combination, 74-6 and suddenly the game was in the balance.

Matt achieved success again when removing Roger, and the hosts were still six shy of three figures.

However, Pete Harness was going well, and together with Toby, they stabilised the reply again, as Writtle looked set to go for broke by continuing to rotate just the three bowlers. When a change was finally made, Pete wasted no time in launching an enormous straight six into the trees. Opener Pradeja was called for again and produced a brute of a bouncer that Pete did well to evade, though it did find his edge whilst taking evasive action - clipping the bat and looping a catch to the keeper. 111-8 - still 34 shy with lots of overs to play with, it was difficult to call a winner.

The opening bowling pair of Toby and Kev were reunited again, and this time with bat in hand to try and see the team to victory. The skipper enjoyed some slices of luck along the way, with Toby playing the much more assured role, but as a partnership it worked well, and gradually runs started to come, even 12 coming off an over from a tiring Pradeja as the winning post came greater into view. With three needed, and the field brought up, Kev hit Gospietty for four to seal an exciting victory for the 1's - by the barest of margins..

A great landmark for the club to make it to this level in the first instance, and to mark it with a win was tremendous, with so many excellent contributions - a real team effort, which will be required throughout a challenging and hopefully exciting season!

We go again next week, packing buckets and spades (ok maybe not) as we head off to play our old friends Burnham.
