Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v East Bergholt on Sun 12 May 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts
Match report
The club made history with their first win in the National Village Cup, earning a place in the third round with victory over East Bergholt, who we fell to in the first stage in last years competition.
Despite only able to field 9 players, the visitors from Suffolk elected to bat on a Woodham wicket that despite no rain for a day was understandably going to play low and slow. And so it proved to be, with batsman struggling to time the ball in the early exchanges. Nevertheless, openers Griffin and Gedny forged a good opening partnership, going at four runs an over, 57-0 from 13 overs. Few would have anticipated that the innings would last just a further 8.4 overs, as the game was turned on its head in the next two overs.
Seeking to accelerate the run rate, the openers decided to run ones and twos. Griffin however chose to pick out the wrong fielder in Jack Shipton, who ran in from mid-off and threw down the stumps with the opener well short of his ground - an excellent piece of fielding to give the hosts a foothold in the game. Gedny hoisted Roger Marshall for six over square leg at the start of the 15th over, but the next two deliveries changed the course of the match. First Gedny perished via an improbable one-handed catch from the skipper in the covers, and when the visiting captain Foster, fresh from a century the previous day received a beauty from Roger to be bowled first ball, momentum had shifted hugely. When Llewelyn was also bowled by Rog later in the same over, the visitors suddenly found themselves 67-4. Rog claimed his fourth, bowled again, as drinks were taken at the halfway mark (20 overs) with the score at 82-5 (effectively 82-7). Despite an economical spell from Manoj Tripathi 0-11 (5), a fifth bowler was required to be introduced with the 8 over per bowler limit.
Gav Cook was entrusted with the ball, and in just four deliveries, took the remaining three wickets, as Bibby, Munson and Griffin fell without scoring - East Bergholt 82 all out.
After a fine tea (thanks Louise!), the run chase commenced. We suffered a couple of early departures as Brown A (4) and Manoj (2), fell, but with Ian Ball providing the glue and craft and Jack Shipton the power, a good partnership was formed to further cement the hosts control of the game. With the target reduced to half, Shippo became the third lbw of the afternoon, trapped in front by Griffin for a run a ball 20. Ball continued to dig in. though the losses of Nick Goode and Josh Love reduced the hosts to 52-5. A breezy 16 from Andy Smith brought victory closer, but when he was the latest to be dismissed lbw, 12 were needed for victory. It was Ian and Toby Pateman that knocked off the remaining runs required, Ian undefeated on 29, Toby with the winning runs to secure a passage into the third round.
So a step closer to Lords for the club, though the next challenge will be a testing one, with either a visit to Two Counties Div 1 side Woolpit, or TRippon Div 1 side Great Waltham. We wait and see. The match will take place on Sunday May 26.
Good effort one an all!!!
