Ingatestone v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 23 Jun 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 9 wkts

Match report As the old soothsayer Mick McCarthy used to say (about the Championship) that the league is bonkers. Well that could also apply to the Trippon Div 2 as the 1's went to top of the table Ingatestone and turned league form upside down, bowling the hosts out for just 98 and winning in double quick time to earn a huge 9 wkt victory.

The home side won the toss and elected to bat (though visiting skipper Wright was keen to chase) on what looked a good batting strip, with inviting short boundaries.

The 1's were to get an early breakthrough as Wright bowled Bonnington (1) in the first over to get the visitors off to a good start. Wright followed that up by trapping Fletcher (1) in front as the hosts soon found themselves 15-2. The wicket of home skipper Grobler appeared key as the opening left-hander looked in good touch. After the ball made it's first foray into the neighbouring pond, Wright got one through the defences of Grobler (22), late movement ensuring that the ball clipped the off-stump after the batsman had elected to leave the ball. 30-3 and the visitors very much in the game.

John Marshall, who up until now had bowled well with no reward at the other end, joined in as Batchelor (11) gloved a rising delivery behind to keeper Andy Smith who made no mistake. 44-4.

Namesake G Smith went on the counter attack, but fell for the sucker punch as he holed out to Jack Shipton, positioned on the long-off boundary, who duly took a fine catch. When Pudney was caught sharply by Manoj Tripathi at short gully for 2, Wright had claimed his fifth wicket and the sixth of the Ingatestone innings, the home side in all sorts of trouble at 60-6.

Once Kev and John had completed their spells, there was to be no respite, as George Verlander soon got in the act, bowling Poole (11) and drawing Tunnard (0) into a loose drive that went straight to Wright. 79-8. Hodgson had some stickability, but when debutatant Rowan Clark got one to come back into the batsman, who had elected to leave, only to find his off-stump knocked back, the innings was almost over. A couple of overs later it was, as Toby Pateman got in on the act, comfortably taking a return catch as the leaders were bowled out for 98 in just 27 overs.

The chase did not start in ideal fashion for the visitors as Chapman bowled Toby, but later in the same over, two imperious cover drives from Dan Smith, the latter into the pond, set the tone for the innings.

The small total and short boundaries could not contain the returning Woodies no 3, as he took control, scoring boundaries with great regularity. Manoj played his part too in a stellar partnership. The first 5 overs disppeared for 30 as the runs were being chased in quick time. 23 were taken from a solitary Pudney over as the scoreboard continued to roll. 10 overs in and the victory target was in sight - 72-1, Dan bringing up his 50.

Despite a couple of chances to claim the wicket of Manoj, who was put down twice late on (three times in total), the runs continued to be chalked off. With the over count just past 15 overs and at 4.25pm, Dan crashed his 11th boundary of a whirlwind innings to successfully complete the chase, 99-1 from 15.3 overs, victory by 9 wkts, a quite superb performance.

An excellent performance in all disciplines, and two wins on the spin for the first time this season, hopefully more consistency to be shown from here on. Still challenges ahead with everyone beating each other, but we are now in that mix doing the same.

Next week another challenge, as Little Waltham visit the Pheasantry.
