Match report
So, after the Pups first week win they moved on to the home of St Andrews. Unfortunately this was not the links course nor the University but Hannakins Farm in Billericay. With the skipper choosing Queen and Country on the toss and it disappointingly falling the other way the Woodies were put into bat.
A quick re-shuffle of the pack with "Pinky" turning up late after saturday detention meant that Ball and Brown opened the innings. This was to result in a very fruitful partnership, a sign of things to come perhaps. With quick singles and the odd boundary ensuring the visitors entered drinks with an unbroken opening partnership of 80. This partnership was soon broken after tea with first change bowler Walker taking his first of five wickets with the skipper charging at a wide delivery to be caught behind for 44. This dismissal brought about a collapse that many a Woodham side have witnessed before. 86 for 0 soon became 113-6 with Coulson, Hayman, Costin and Cook falling cheaply, these wickets along with the big blow of Ball for 40 left the Woodies with a difficult 13 overs and only 4 wickets in hand. The big hitting Harness, backed up by the steady Cook of the G variety built a good partnership which brought Woodham up towards a respectable target. Unfortunately the fall of Harness for a quick fire 34 essentially ending the innings with only 8 more runs put on for the final 3 wickets. Woodham finishing on 167 knowing that they were probably a little short of runs.
The batting collapse from the first innings did not dampen the Woodham spirits with Preston picking up a wicket in his first over, caught behind by the fine addition behind the stumps of Costin. This wicket brought Greenwood to the crease who along with opening Batsmen A. Street, started to build a good partnership. This Partnership was eventually broken with G. Cook, buoyed on be the many references to cooking trapped Greenwood LBW for 21. A second wicket was denied the impressive Cook after the square leg umpire decided the electric Costin was too slow behind the stumps to have stumped P. Street. This tight decision was to prove the pivotal moment in the game as P. Street (36) and A. Street (58) took the game away from the visitors. Both batsmen finally fell to the "Grandmaster" Steve (Flash) Collis. These Wickets brought Woodham back into the game and a couple more quick wickets, one for Harness, the first of many in his Woodham league career, and a brilliant catch for G. Cook giving Older a wicket gave the visitors hope. However a good stand between G. Street and D. Newman took the game away from Woodham and gave the win to the home team.
A disappointing batting performance after being given a good platform ultimately cost us the game today, the bowling and fielding being exceptional made this game tighter than it should have been. Lessons will need to be learnt from the Batsmen, with the visit of Boreham to the home of cricket next week i am sure the Pups will bounce back strong.
