Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Willow Herbs on Sat 06 Jun 2015 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 7 wkts

Match report An uncharacteristically under par performance as the 1's succumbed to defeat at home to Willow Herbs.

Batting first for the sixth successive match, the change opening pairing of Rod Brazier and Andy Smith started well, as a solid foundation to the innings was laid. Just as the partnership approached 50, Smith departed for a fluid 30, deceived by one of the Walsh brothers, bearing an uncanny resemblance to our own Ollie Glasson. Brazier continued, and in conjunction with Neil Smith, took the score into 3 figures. Brazier reached a well crafted 50, until was adjudged lbw off the bowling of Yorke. That loss was soon to be further compounded by the loss of Smith to injury - a pulled hamstring which would end his participation in the match - retired hurt for 34 when looking set for a big score.

Yorke struck again as he took a return catch to dismiss Neil Cook, but a recovery was mounted by Roger Marshall and Kev Wright, who put together a partnership of 33, to take the score past the 150 mark. Roger was unfortunate for the second week running to be the victim of a excellent catch, departing for 16. Last weeks star with the bat, Connor Hayman lasted just one delivery, giving Yorke a straight forward return catch. WMCC stumbled from 155-3 to 161-6 in next to no time. Further late wickets fell which earnt Yorke a five wicket haul, Wright finished unbeaten on 32 as the innings ended with a much shorter total than desired, 174-8.

The reply started well for the visitors who scored 15 from the first over. Thankfully the rate was soon slowed as Wright removed both openers cheaply, but that brought the form pairing of Harris and Barker to the crease. Both played fluidly, and took the game away from the hosts. Roger Marshall bowled Barker around his legs shortly after he had made 50, but a chanceless unbeaten 76 from Harris, together with some no pressure situation hitting from Yorke, took the visitors to a deserved 7 wkt win.

A disappointing defeat, with the turning point of the game the departures of Rod and Nelly in quick succession, followed by the inability to generate any significant partnerships lower down the order - in stark contrast to last week at Great Totham. Challenging to field with 10 men, but credit to the in form Herbs batsman, who performed well.

A 'Championship' type league is starting to shape, as everyone is beating each other. One of those two exceptions, is Springfield 3rd, currently in the bottom two, whom we visit next Saturday at the splendour of Coronation Park. We will soon forget this recent defeat and focus on getting back into the winning habit.
