Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Old Chelmsfordians 2nd on Sat 07 Jun 2014 at 1.30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 7 wkts

Match report An excellent team performance with the ball, and a sparkling half-century with the bat from Andy Smith led the 1's to a comprehensive victory over visitors Old Chelmsfordians at Pheasant Park.

After morning showers, skipper Wright won the toss and elected to field.

Testing opening spells from Connor Hayman and Tom Payne accounted for both openers, Hayman picking up both wickets to fall. Despite brief flurries from Barnstone and Norman, both fell to the returning Wright, Brown taking a catch at the second attempt with Hayman demonstrating a cleaner pair of hands. Payne deservedly got in the act claiming his first wicket, as the visitors continued to be in trouble, at 55-5. Enter Craig Marshall and Keith Mitchell, the pairing that performed well at Thurrock last week. Despite the hand played from visiting skipper Ball in top scoring with 25, the bowlers chipped away at the other end, with Marshall picking up three more wickets, including a sharp return catch, whilst the guile of Mitchell accounted for the final two wickets to fall, including a smart low catch at point by Payne. OC's all out for 95 - an excellent team effort.

The reply did not start quite in the fashion that we would have liked, as both Ian Ball and Rod Brazier returned to the pavilion with the score on 6. Any hopes that the visitors had on turning the game further in their favour were damped down by the partnership between Josh Brady & Neil Smith. Brady played positively, and looked in good touch as he quickly moved to 22. However, when a big score looked likely, change bowler Hart, with an indifferent delivery that was close to bouncing twice - induced an improbable scoop to point. Positive signs of things to come for Josh however.

Enter Andy Smith to join namesake Nelly. A sumptuous drive for four set the tone for his innings, as the game soon started to disappear from the OC's. With Nelly anchoring at one end, Andy played an array of expansive shots, even managing to clear the boundary after the bat had fallen from his hands.

Various bowlers were tried, but none could really stem the flow, and the winning runs were fittingly hit by Andy, with a six that brought up a 30-ball half-century (his first for the 1's). Victory by 7 wkts with nearly 30 overs to spare.

An excellent team performance and one that has propelled the team to 3rd in the league. It sets the benchmark for the challenges that are to be faced in forthcoming weeks to maintain and improve that league position - starting with a trip to Galleywood next Sat.
