Saturday 26th June 2021
Great Waltham CC 1st XI v Woodham Mortimer CC 1st XI
Match Report
With captain Kev away on a Cornish adventure stand-in skipper Jeeves started the day splendidly when the toss was lost and the visitors were invited to bowl first on what can only be described as ‘a bit of a road.’
However, the brakes were suddenly put on Great Waltham’s promising start when H. Elles (2) chanced Craig Platt’s arm for a quick leg side single only to be run out with a direct hit. Not long after the remaining opener, D. Bloom (10), slipped mid-run whilst taking on 1st XI debutant Grace Melhuish who launched the ball from square leg to the bowler’s end where Toby Pateman finished the job off. A great start for the Woodies.
The new opening bowling partnership of Toby Pateman and Craig Platt worked well with the two finding a good line and length on a pitch that offered little. Yet when D. Clout (40) was dropped first ball by Manu Tripathi at slip the momentum of the game began to slip in favour of the home side.
The 1st change bowlers of Manu Tripathi and Roger Marshall bowled extremely well with Roger finally picking up the wicket of D. Clout with a thunderous in-swinging Yorker. Nevertheless, the game was far from over.
S. Harris (99) continued to bat well, despite running out his partner O. Fitzwater (34), when a cover drive ricocheted off Oliver Glasson into the path of Damian Abeyratna who took down the stumps. Though the positive energy quickly drained when L. Chapman (118) came to the crease to hit his maiden century off of 55 balls – a performance which included six fours and nine sixes.
Craig Platt returned towards the close of the innings to pick up three wickets, first S. Harris, who found Toby Pateman waiting at Long Off, second A. Warren (4), who hit a fine pull shot for four only to kick his stumps over and finally skipper J. Fitzwater (1) who skied one underneath the waiting hands of Dan Smith.
319-7. Game on.
After a short interval WMCC prepared themselves for the long chase before them. But when Dan Smith (0) was removed in the 2nd ball of the innings the task at hand seemed even more monumental.
And so it began:
Ollie Glasson (1) Caught.
Damian Abeyratna (16) Caught.
Jack Shipton (0) Caught.
Craig Platt (12) Bowled.
Andrew Brown (1) Run Out.
Toby Pateman (17) Caught.
Manu Tripathi (4) Caught.
Grace Melhuish (0) Caught.
Roger Marshall (3) Caught.
George Verlander (0) – Agonisingly stranded not out with a mere 259 runs left to chase.
Woodham Mortimer CC 60 all out.
It was a tough day at the office for WMCC against one of the league’s top teams who will undoubtedly (and hopefully) be a premier division side next season. 60 all out does not reflect on what we are capable of with the bat and perhaps with a little more composure we could have done better. However, with a tremendous fielding performance, bowlers which utilised their plans well and a united team spirit throughout we must take the positives. Let us re-group and go again next week when we travel to Writtle CC for an important lower table clash that marks the 2nd half of the league season.
Up The Woodies.
