WMCC V ICCC Match Report

It was a warm and breezy afternoon at pheasant park as Woodham welcomed Ilford Catholic’s.

Skipper GV lost the toss and was invited to bat first by the guests. The visitor’s opening pair started well and a watchful Tom Payne and Andrew Brown picked off a few loose deliveries to get off the mark.

However, not soon after the first wicket of the day fell when Brown attempted to pull one off his nose but nicked through to the keeper. Tanveer smelt blood and on the next ball had Jack Preston’s stumps removed no sooner had he taken his guard. Jared Payne managed to survive the hat-trick ball but in the next over succumbed to the same fate.

Had ICCC’s point fielder held onto Pete Harness’s first ball the situation could have proved dire. However, fortune favoured WMCC on this occasion, and Harness proceeded to capitalise on this soon to be costly mistake.

Tommy Payne, who had provided a solid foundation at the start, failed to cash in on the change bowling as he was bowled off the inside edge just before drinks.

A refuelled ICCC rang the changes with both bowlers and ball - which looked like it had been chased around a rough field by Eddie the Whippet for an hour.

George and Pete, with the help of a firmer ball, increased the run rate as runs began flowing around the ground. A lovely straight six from Pete and two huge blows from George into the trees swung the momentum into the woodies favour.

As he pushed for further runs Pete unfortunately chipped one back to the bowler and departed for another half-century. Soon after Verlander joined him back in the pavilion, retiring on 50 for his first of the season. A solid partnership once again by the pair.

Manoj accumulated a solid 40* and a few from Pateman against the returning opening pair bought the WMCC innings to a close with a total of 228 posted on a used wicket.

The young guns Angus and Josh opened the bowling and both started well with Josh picking up his first adult wicket for the club in his first over.

However, M Riches stepped in at 3 and grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, throwing the under 13’s off their lengths with some clean and deft hitting. S Barot also came to the party with a huge huge six after using the inside edge for a majority of his score.

With runs scoring freely the bowling combination of Tom Payne and Toby Pateman was required to steady a nervous ship.

Tommy displayed his 80 years of cricket experience by bowling sharp varied pace and Toby supported this greatly by keeping to a tight line with stump to stump deliveries. This pair pegged back the ICCC onslaught and turned the tide of the match for the woodies, undoubtedly securing the victory with their magnificent bowling spells.

With only 25 runs coming between the 10th-20th overs the squeeze was back on. A change to off spin after drinks proved effective as Toby picked up another after a great caught and bowled. Tom Payne shortly followed this up when he removed the opposition skipper, though he thoroughly deserved more than he got that day, like many others before.

With revolutions proving effective the change pair of Gav and George set to the task. Riches reached his 50 with a fine innings and retired.

George went straight to work and took a victim with his first ball, as the batsman scooped one high above the bowler, right into the hands of the eagerly awaiting Pateman at Mid-off.

And then the spell, ten years in the making, finally followed.

Bowled.

Caught and bowled.

LBW.

Jeeves had four. For the 10th time ever with no prestigious 5 wicket haul to show for it.

The captaincy passed to Pateman, who set an extremely tight field around the batsman, as he stood at short leg wearing the lid. A loose full ball outside off crashed into the arm of Browny who superbly stopped a four as he tried to get out the way of the shot - revenge perhaps for dropping GV’s 5-wicket haul in his first ever home game in 2010.

You’re welcome AB.

And then the moment came. GV floated the ball down the track. The batsman, eyeing up a shot over mid-wicket, struck it firmly into the air. A dismayed GV congratulated the batsman, before seeing that but one Woodham fielder remained on the boundary. The ground fell silent. Time stood still. And finally, after what felt like an age, Peter Harness caught the ball off the line to finally bring Jeeves his long awaited 5 wicket haul.

The curse had finally been broken after a decade of trying.

Though Riches did return he did not last long as Gav sealed WMCC’s 13th consecutive victory of the season. WMCC would like to extend their sincere thanks to ICCC who played a well contested game in good spirits. We wish you all the very best with the remaining season ahead.

A special mention to GV for his long awaited achievement. It’s about time Jeevesy.
