Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v East Hanningfield & Great Burstead on Sat 04 Jul 2015 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 103 runs
Match report
The 1's completed their first double of the season with a comprehensive 103 run victory at home to neighbours East Hanningfield.
Invited to bat on the same strip used in the demolition of Thurrock in the previous fixture, openers Rod Brazier and Andy Smith continued where they left off, attacking from the start. The pair raced to another brisk 50 partnership within 8 overs, until Smith top edged a delivery from Oakes and departed for 18. That brought recent graduate Stephen Richardson (I didn't realise he went to Uni either) to the crease, finally earning an opportunity to bat after weeks of waiting.
The new pairing blended well, Rod continuing to attack with Stephen providing a solid anchor role. At the first drinks break, essential on the hottest day of the cricket season to date, the home side were 97-1, Rod passing 50 for the fifth time this season. The partnership had also just reached the 50 mark when Asif removed Rod for just over a run a ball 64. The returning Ian Ball joined forces with Richardson and they continued to tick the scoreboard over, running well between the wickets and putting away the bad ball. A third 50 partnership of the innings looked imminent, but a rising delivery from Morgan took the top edge of Ball's bat - departing for 15. WMCC 147-3 at the 30 over drinks break.
Stephen soon deservedly passed 50, a patient knock, and the glue to the innings. With a solid platform and wickets in hand, this enabled the middle order to play with freedom and take the game to the visitors. Numerous cameos later, the score moved past the 200 mark with 5 overs to go, as Morgan, who had bowled his first 8 overs for 30, was smashed for 32 from his last two of his spell. At the innings close, maximum batting points had been achieved, as the hosts posted an imposing 243-9.
In response, Connor Hayman enjoyed early success, Goody nicking a rising ball to slip, the chance safely pouched by buckets Ball. At the other end, Asif was a man on a mission, seeking to launch anything and everything to the legside boundary. Joined by Adil, the pair sought to get the visitors up with the run rate in an unconventional manner - and with a good degree of success.
The skipper, who had borne the brunt of most of the early innings fireworks, finally got one through the defences of Adil for a swift 19. Asif soon followed, for an equally speedy 22, Brazier claiming the catch to earn Hayman his second wicket. The visitors 50-3 from 11 overs. With these dismissals and a double bowling change, the run rate slowed dramatically as George Verlander & Keith Mitchell worked well in tandem, the latter claiming two scalps, including a smart stumping from Smith to dismiss Morgan. George finally got the wicket that his bowling spell deserved as Oakes skied a catch to Craig Marshall - remarkably his first of the season.
Craig and Phillip Schofield tribute act Tom Payne entered the attack and removed the middle order, as the game drew nearer its inevitable conclusion. A last wicket stand by Green and Smith delayed proceedings, but finally Marshall beat Green, clattering the middle stump - and earning a comprehensive win by a margin of 103 runs.
Another excellent team performance, with contributions from all - most notably by those at the top of the batting order. We hold onto second place, but next week brings another tough fixture, as we make our way to the picturesque surroundings of High Easter.
