Match report
The 1’s made the short trip to the luxurious facilities at second placed OC’s, knowing that only a win would keep alive the ambitions of achieving an instant return to Division Three.
With the wicket still damp, skipper Wright called correctly and elected to field. Instant success was almost achieved, though Connor Hayman had obviously only had one weetabix in the morning as whilst he hit Cook’s off stump the bails did not budge.
Undeterred, he soon had his man, this time middle stump proving more fruitful. Hayman also dismissed follow opener Eva cheaply as WMCC started strongly. Read and Joy played expansively, particularly the latter who opened up from the off. Chances came and went, but a smart low catch by Hayman at second slip saw the departure of Read for 32, a well earned wicket for Tom Payne. Payne also removed Joy, playing one aerial shot too many, Craig Marshall clinging on at the second attempt at long on. With Wright drawing an edge and an expert catch at the wicket by Andy Smith to dismiss Alderton without scoring, the home side were in some danger at 62-5.
Barnstone survived an early scare and he, together with skipper Ball dug the home side out of trouble and took the score well into three figures. Just as Barnstone approached 50, Marshall found a leading edge, the ball chipped to a grateful Rod Brazier in the covers. Brazier was soon in action again, producing a direct hit that saw Ball short of his ground.
Despite a further wicket for Marshall and another for the returning Hayman, the tail waged sufficiently to get the home side up to a challenging, but not insurmountable, 178-9 from their 45 overs.
In response, the opening pair of Brazier and Ian Ball put on a first wicket stand of 51 until the former top edged to slip for 24. Ball and Neil Smith continued to chalk away at the target, until Ball clipped to mid-wicket, though it took an excellent one handed catch from Alderton to dismiss the opener.
Rather mirroring the Indians effort at Old Trafford, the 1’s middle order performed a mini-collapse of its own, with three wickets falling in one Hadjmichael over, the score moving rapidly from 80-2 to 84-5. With Hayman run out without scoring and the scoreboard still showing 84, the situation looked bleak. Once both Smith’s Andy and Neil had departed, victory seemed a long way away, 113-8.
However, Marshall and Payne got stuck in and showed their abilities and displayed an array of shots in an excellent partnership of 51, remaining unbeaten on 34 and 20 respectively, their innings only halted by the overs running out, signalling defeat, albeit by just 14 runs.
Another case of what might have been. After coming close against Thurrock last week, the team came up just short again, the margins between victory and defeat so fine in both fixtures.
Whilst a second placed finish may now be challenging to achieve, a top three finish would still represent an excellent achievement.
There are plenty of points to play for with three to go, as we welcome bottom of the table Galleywood, the next visitors to Pheasant Park.
