Match report Tight finishes that go the distance are becoming the norm for WMCC 1's, as yet another league encounter went right down to the wire. However, as with many of the matches, victory was tantalisingly close, but not achieved. Following the 1 wkt defeat at Springfield, just a boundary separated the sides at Pheasant Park.

Asked to bat, the Rayleigh opening pair both made half centuries, as the first wicket took some time to achieve. It could and should have been different, as Impey clearly nicked to 'keeper Smith, but without the aid of a review or hotspot, both batsman and umpire remained unmoved. Both openers fell within a short space of time and the runs were gradually dried up, and what had looked like a score of 250 was reduced greatly to just in excess of 200.

Another solid opening partnership, this time between Beames (42) & Brazier (35) yielded 74, but following their departures, the middle order, with the exception of the in form belligerent 'Buffalo' Biggs, wickets regularly fell and with 7 overs remaining, WMCC were 133-6. Biggs hit the accelerator and smashed huge sixes to draw the target closer. With 12 balls remaining, the target stood at 35. With 21 smashed from over 44, 14 were needed from the final over. Crucially, Biggs finally departed for a brilliant 60, and the boundaries dried up. 6 were needed from the final ball to tie, and despite Connor Hayman launching the ball skywards, it was more height than distance, and just 2 runs were possible. Defeat by 4 runs.

Another hugely close encounter, and typical of the 2013 season. How different the league table would look if a couple of those tight finishes had ended in victory. However, the team is in good form, and hope that the narrow defeats can be turned in victory in the matches that follow, particularly in the crunch match at relegation rivals Galleywood next Saturday.
