Tillingham 1st v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 20 Jul 2013 at 1.30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 2 wkts

Match report Whilst lacking the gravitas of the surroundings of Trent Bridge, this was a tight and exciting encounter, with the home side just coming out on top, winning by 2 wkts. WMCC made Tillingham, fresh from smashing 384 in their previous league match, work hard to achieve the 135 that they required in this fixture.

As with the reverse fixture earlier in the season, WMCC faced the unusual trial by spin, with 31 overs of the slow stuff. As with the match in May, it served to keep a squeeze on the run rate throughout. Once the most productive partnership of 40 between Rod Brazier & Andy Smith had been ended, WMCC slumped from 59-1 to 95-7. This was despite a good counter attacking 28 from debutant Peter Kettley, which transpired to be the highest score of the innings. A significant 8th wicket partnership between Andy Brown & George Verlander yielded 34, excellent given the state of the match, helping WMCC set a low, but nevertheless potentially difficult total.

Hayman and Wright set about the Tillingham top order and both dangermen, Cummins & Ford, who had plundered the week before, were sent packing for ducks apiece, aided by superb catches from Neil Smith & Brown. 6-3 became 33-4, but the experience of Chapman & Barrell put on 56 for the 5th wicket, a key partnership. Hayman returned to bowl Barrell and when spinner Mitchell had Chapman caught behind and Emerson out for 0 shortly after, Tillingham had been reduced from 89-4 to 93-7. Dennis threw the bat at the ball & his 23, along with Parlour (14*) took the home side close to the brink. Dennis fell with ten needed, but Parlour kept the tail from being exposed, as Tillingham squeezed home by 2 wkts.

A hugely competitive game (again!) and a good fighting spirit displayed despite the relatively low total that was set on albeit a challenging strip. The roadshow temporarily stops with the visit of promotion chasing Rainham next week at the home of cricket.
