Match report The first game of the season has come and gone and we couldn’t of asked for a better start!

After winning the toss, new 1st XI captain Dan elected to bowl on a slightly damp topped pitch which looked like it would do a bit early doors…. That turned out to be the wrong decision as Brookwealds openers got off to a strong start. With loose shots coming left, right and centre it was only a matter of time before a catch went to hand! Cue Mr Reliable Kev Wright and Nigel Costin to combine with 3 wickets in as many overs and an LBW to top it off! With Toby bowling tight lines and keeping the pressure on, the opening pair set a fantastic foundation to build upon!

Next up was Dan and Alex Franklin to continue the good work. With Mark Beames holding onto a good catch to dismiss the remaining Brookweald opener for 46, it seemed that the hard work was done… but R Harvey had other ideas. With some big hitting and a partner in Naqvi, a challenging total of 200+ was looking like the inevitable target. A comeback from Toby Pateman stemmed the flow of runs and with a couple of wickets from him and George Verlander at the death, 220-9 was the final total.

With a dried out outfield and deck, 220 looked under par but as it was first game of the season and a reputation to uphold when it comes to batting… it was only fitting that we were to be 2 down within 4 overs. A short ball getting the better of Franklin in the first over and Craig Platt with a loose drive outside the off stump meant that Dan and Jack Shipton had a ship to steady and fast! And that’s exactly what they did. 40/2 off of 10 overs and an injured opening bowler later, the big lads turned up the heat with blows to the boundary coming a lot more often. The winter had not been good to them and that was clear to see with the pace between the wickets!

With Brookwealds wicket keeper having to get some attention to an injured finger, early drinks were taken with the score at 88/2 off of 19. The introduction of captain Finch and Verma was greeted with open arms as loose deliveries were pounced upon with regular boundaries giving both batsmen a well deserved break! Unfortunately, Jack fell to a loose leg side delivery as he picked out deep square leg! A well earned 44 and a 137 partnership to start off the season!

Enter 2nd XI vice captain Jack Preston much to his dismay! Luckily the skippers confidence was well placed as with needing 70odd still needed to see the game out and captain Dan becoming more immobile as time passed, a quick fire 32 was exactly what was needed to take the last bit of sting out of the Brookweald attack! With 12 runs remaining, Jack fell to a leg stump(ish) full toss, which wrapped the pads and was quickly sent on his way.

With Mark Beames at his side, Dan sealed his first league 100 of the year! Fingers crossed for more to come this year!

Mark was then trapped in front to Hussain Ghani which introduced Gav Cook to see out the game with Dan.

Great effort from all and was a pleasure to lead the club to its first league victory of the season!
Player of the match was given to Dan for his 109* but big mentions to Kev Shippo and Jack for their much needed contributions at key times!

Next we are at Home to Springfields 3s where we will look to continue the great start! Have a great week all!
