Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Basildon & Pitsea CC 1st XI on Sat 12 Jun 2021 at 13:00
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 80 runs

Match report A feast of runs as the 1's entertained pacesetters Basildon and Pitsea, just shy of 550 runs scored on another hot day at the home of cricket.

Three changes to last weeks victory at Epping, given the absences of the recuperating Nigel Costin (who we all wish a speedy recovery), a self-isolating GV and Andrew Brown, enjoying (or enduring) another day at the test. In for debut was Alex Franklin, whilst Peppa Pig World's loss was our gain as Damian Abeyratna returned to the fold, whilst Mark Beames inclusion ensured we matched our opponents international quota.

With the sun beating down, visiting skipper Bedford called correctly and elected to bat. Davies and Singleton were out of the blocks quickly, as the tone for the runs was set early on, the left/right hand combination working well. Once radars were found by Kev Wright and Toby Pateman, the run rate was checked to a more modest 4 and over, with Toby bagging both openers, both lbw. Kev and Toby bowled their allotted 10 though were unable to add any further wickets, though on another day with more fortune, could have picked up at least a couple more, which could have been crucial. 87-2 from 20 was a reasonable return given the true nature of the wicket and a quick outfield.

Bonnett was soon into his stride, and struck the ball well from the off, an ominous sign of what was to come. Ayres began brightly too, though like Davies and Singleton before him, fell in his 20's, early success for Ollie Glasson. The visitors needed to find someone that was going to go on and convert a start, and once Bonnett was joined by Vutha, this was achieved in spades, as they batted tremendously well, timing the ball well and finding the gaps, despite some decent bowling. Both passed 50, though Vutha was finally removed, a first wicket for Craig Platt in a good spell in challenging circumstances with set batsman hitting the ball to all parts.

Bonnett continued to attack and scoring at will, and progress to a big big score continued once he was joined at the crease by Leonard. Bonnett deservedly secured three figures, finishing unbeaten on 125. A late wicket for Abey, picking up the wicket of Leonard for 32 was reward for his endeavours, but Basildon completed their innings on an imposing 310-5, the highest total for some seasons.

If the 1's had any chance, a fast start would be required, and new opening combo Dan Smith and Abey set about doing just that, motoring along at 7 an over for the first 7. It took something special to seperate the pair, as Dan top edged a Staff delivery miles into the air. Unfortunately for Dan, opposing opening bat Davies tracked the ball superbly, taking a tremendous catch whilst the ball dropped over his shoulder, a huge boost for Basildon. Catches win matches, and this was a big breakthrough.

It was great to see Craig Platt get off the mark as he joined Abey to continue the momentum of the chase. Runs continued to flow, and that progress was not halted even when Leonard, who has achieved some astonishing figures so far this season, joined the attack. The score had moved onto 80 from 16, when Craig, as is customary, got a decent delivery, Dean Bedford getting one to gently lift the bail of the off-stump, Craig departing for an unlucky 13.

In form Shippo entered the fray, though could not repeat his half-century feats of the previous two matches, Bedford again the wicket taker, though it took a decent catch at mid-off to see the back of Jack for 7.

Abey was enjoying his afternoon with the willow, and brought up his 50 with a tremendous blow off Leonard, as he rose to the challenge tremendously. It was a joy to watch. Teamed with Ollie Glasson, the hosts enjoyed another good period with runs flowing at a good rate, which gave hope to still being able to chase down the sizeable total.

In the 27th over, Leonard finally picked up his first wicket of the afternoon, Abey attempting another big hit, though this time bowled for a superb 78 from 86 balls. 148-4, 163 required from 18 overs the equation, albeit a challenging one. Mark Beames signalled his intentions with an early straight six, but soon became Leonard's second victim. Ollie and debutant Alex continued to carry the fight, but when Ollie picked out long on to fall for a well made 30, the task of winning looked an even taller order. With 10 overs to go, 120 were required, a good game to win from here, a challenge made harder once Alex also picked out Leonard in the deep.

From here, Basildon were happy to contain and set the field back to do just that, and Toby and Manoj Tripathi saw the 1's to the maximum batting point yardstick - the pair producing 29 between them as Woodham completed their innings on 230-7.

Defeat, but against a very good side, who I am sure will be in the promotion mix come the end of the season. Basildon batted tremendously well, on a wicket that Nathan should be proud of producing, with, in all truth, not an awful lot wrong from the bowlers. Credit too to all the boundary raiders who covered significant ground throughout a long 45 overs, and for the team at sticking to the task in hand despite the big total.

Another decent performance with the bat, with the standout showing that of Abey, more of that please!

A gap in the calendar for the 1's next week, as we have a week off, which may be ideally timed for so many to rest aching limbs.

We return to action on 26 June with a trip to Great Waltham.

Until then..
