Writtle CC 1st XI v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 03 Jul 2021 at 13:00
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 5 wkts

Match report The 1's were on the road again as they ventured to Paradise Park, but failed to take the bounty as they were defeated by 5 wkts by Writtle.

Asked to bat first on a good track freshened up by recently fallen rain, Dan Smith and Andrew Brown opened up, and it was Biff that was first to fall, defeated by one that kept v low to depart for 10. Browny and form horse Damian Abeyratna put on a stellar stand, both playing with fluency and freedom. Just as when it looked as though we would be celebrating a 50 for Browny, he was bowled by Koimuttam for a well made 44, easily his best performance with the bat for some time - and was great to see.

Abey did raise his bat, bringing up his 50 with a big six, as steady progress of five an over continued to be maintained. Good partnerships of 30 with the returning Tom Payne and 44 with Ollie Glasson were forged as progress to maximum batting points continued.

Abey eventually departed for an excellent 85, his top score for WMCC. Next stop, the ton. The skipper hit a quickfire 30 not out as the 1's finished their innings posting what looked a decent 234-8 at the close.

The reply started well, as Writtle openers Adams and Patel scored freely - and the initial momentum that they built was never able to be wrestled back by the visitors. Manoj Tripathi eventually accounted for Adams (39), the skipper taking a well judged one-handed catch to dismiss the home captain. Wickets however we hard to come by, as Patel and new partner Farooq continued to score quickly. It was Manu again that provided the breakthrough, beating the outside edge of Patel to bowl the opener for 54.

After then, with an increasing number of the visiting fielders struggling with injury, the task to cover the large outfield was becoming more difficult. The positive during the latter half of the Writtle innings was disrupted by an excellent bowling display by Ollie Glasson, picking up a very creditable 3-31. However Writtle made comfortable progress to their target, deservedly winning by 5 wkts with nearly 10 overs to go.

A tough day, a decent display with the bat, though ultimately, as it proved, at least another 40 or 50 were needed as the 1's toiled away against some good batting from the hosts.

After two weeks on the road, it is a return to Pheasant Park next Saturday as we host surprise bottom club Burnham.

Until then...
