Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Eastwood on Sat 17 Aug 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 9 wkts
Match report
The 1’s entertained third place Eastwood at Pheasant Park, mercifully without the gale that affected last weeks game at Burnham. A resounding 9 wicket victory ensued as the 1’s earnt their first double of the season, comprehensively outplaying the visitors, who were distinctly weaker than what we would usually expect.
The 1’s showed one late change with Toby Pateman ruled out on medical grounds. Marc Goss was drafted in to take his place.
After yet more rain the day before, the strip looked soft and conducive to bowling - but after winning the toss and mindful of resources, Eastwood skipper Deeming elected to bat.
It was a decision that almost backfired immediately, but Deeming got a reprieve, dropped first ball of the match. Thankfully this was not costly, as on 15, Deeming nicked behind to Andy Smith, giving Kev Wright his first wicket in what was a productive afternoon. Leonard departed next ball in identical fashion, though there was to be no hat-trick.
On 20, there was another double strike, as Wright bowled opener Howe and followed this up shortly after, as Stirrup could only fend off a delivery that popped straight into the clutches of Manu. It was soon another double for the skipper, as Ruffell and Harp followed in successive deliveries, but again alas no hat-trick.
Eastwood 34-6 at this stage, and Kev with all six. No further wickets followed for the skipper, but a return of 6-19 was a personal Woodham best.
The run rate continued to stall, as Dan Smith, George Verlander and Roger Marshall rotated the bowling. George struck in his first over, as Patel pulled straight to Marc who took the chance with ease.
42-7, and the end already in sight, it was to the batsman’s credit that they dug in and hung around for as long as possible, though was not an easy task. But Robinson and Raviraj built up the best partnership of the innings, and frustrated the home sides attempts to conclude the innings.
Finally, on 71, a ball from George stuck in the pitch and Raviraj looped back the most simple of caught and bowled chances. 10 runs later, it was all over, as a short delivery from Roger Marshall was cut to point, where Pete Harness was waiting and comfortably took the catch, Eastwood 81 all out.
It was always going to be a challenge to defend such a total, and runs were scored with regularity as the opening pair of Dan and Andrew Brown, together with a new willow, forged a good partnership, batting almost exclusively from the ends that they started their innings at.
It did not take Dan long to find his range and boundaries were scored with great regularity, Dan bringing up another 50, to take him past 1,000 1’s runs this season and past the milestone of 5,000 runs for the club - a tremendous achievement in a very short space of time.
The opening pair put on a swift 80, but with just two to win, Dan, attempting to win the game with a six, skied a Patel delivery to Deeming, to depart for 62. Brown A and Manu scored the remaining runs required, the victory target reached in just 15.5 overs with the game concluding at the unusually early time of 4.30.
Just two games of the season remain, and we hope for equally positive results, starting with the visit to Brookweald.
Until next week...
