Eastwood v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 18 Aug 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts
Match report
The 1's took another decisive step toward Division Two safety with a 5 wkt win at in-form Eastwood.
With the game being played out to a backdrop of the finest tunes that the Belfairs Golf CLub opposite could muster, the 1's were asked to field first - and made early inroads into the Eastwood top order, as Kev Wright (1-22) and Toby Pateman (2-25) bowled economically. When George Verlander had Lovett caught in the deep, the hosts found themselves in a bit of trouble at 68-4. Howe and Praghash rebuilt the innings and started to score a little bit too freely, as the run rate started to creep up. A change of approach, with Manoj Tripathi at one end and Dan Smith at the other helped to wrestle control, and it was Manoj who struck two decisive blows as he removed Howe (43) and Praghash (35) in quick succession, the latter courtesy of an excellent low catch in the covers by Rod Brazier. Suddenly 132-4 had become 139-6.
There was some resistance in the late order and tail but the run rate had noticeably dropped. A third wicket for Manoj, again aided in the covers by Rod was followed by a couple for Dan. Though the last wicket could not be claimed, a return of 184-9 at the conclusion of the innings looked under par.
A solid start in the chase was required and was progressing well until the impressive Worrall found the leading edge of Brazier's bat - the opener caught by home skipper Deeming for 15. The two that had enjoyed late innings succcess with the ball were reunited with the bat, but it was not long before Manoj also became a victim of Worrall, bowled for 10. 40-2 from 11 overs. This soon became 43-3 as Andy Smith found the safe hands of Deeming.
Dan, fresh from two consecutive hundreds was understandalby in good form, and found a partner in Jack Shipton to work with and block Eastwood's path back into the game. Runs began to flow more freely and above the required run rate. The pair enjoyed a partnership of 69 until Jack found Praghash in the deep, who took an excellent one handed diving catch. Nigel Costin looked good in his time at the crease but mistimed a drive and lofted straight to cover. 131-5, the run-rate no problem and Dan in such good touch, he needed another willing partner.
It was great to see that someone was Pete Harness, who once he got himself in started to play with great freedom and provided a perfect foil for Dan as the pair took the attack to the hosts. The victory target rapidly came into view with boundaries being struck with more regularity.
Victory looked assured and with plenty of overs to go, it remained to be seen as to whether Dan could clock up a third successive century. With just two required, Dan hit Deeming for 4 to bring up three figures, an outstanding feat - and took the 1's home.
An excellent win against an in-form side and one that takes the 1's up to a very credible fifth place going into the final two games of the season, and should guarantee a place in Division Two for next season, which when confirmed will be an excellent acheivement.
Onto next week, our final home game of the season (incredible to think that!) as we host Ingatestone, fresh from a big win against the then league leaders Little Waltham.
Until next week...
