Match report
On a day that would have been better for sailing and kite flying, Mickley and his magnificent men headed into the depths of the Dengie to take on our old friends at Tillingham. Mickley won the Visa card flip by correctly guessing chip and pin, (this is the future of the coin toss in a cashless society) and decided to have a bowl. With the impeding weather it was agreed 10 overs from the same end to keep the game moving. With that Preston and Jones came steaming in. An early breakthrough when M Taylor hit a rocket off of Jones straight to Mid-off and Preston took a sharp catch. Not to be outdone Preston had Ahmed bowled for 8 and before the first spells were done there was time for another wicket, as Shipton hit Jones (by this time sporting the new nickname Shark from Mr Brown & Cook) to Gav for a simple catch. For the next 10 Mickley decided to deploy his " Youth" policy and brought on Collis and Mitchel. Both bowled well into the gale force wind with Peggy bowling a lovely delivery to get rid of Wade. This brought in the hard-hitting Patel.
At drinks Tillingham were 4 down for 120. The captain decided it was time to give the fans what they wanted plus he didn't fancy bowling into the wind at his pace and brought himself and Platt into the fold. They say sometimes it is better to be lucky than skilful as Craig (now sporting the nickname Sigourney thanks to our old friends Brown and Cook) bowled excellently without reward, whereas Mickley's bag of liquor all sorts claimed the wicket of Patel. (77 left to get for those that are counting) Ashworth went onto retire for a well-made 50. For the next 10 Mickley turned to Gav and Angus to start us off. Angus bowled well except for the occasions he decided to bowl off 20 yards rather than 22 and should have had a wicket bowled if not for this. After 2 tight overs from Gav Mickley brought back "Shark" to finish off and after bowling Ashworth- Leech & Cobb in back-to-back bowls he was on a hattrick and would have got it if the paint on off stump was a bit thicker missing by just millimetres, some excellent figures for Jones 4-24. Mickley proved he had made the right decision not bowling himself into the wind when he brought on A Brown on for one over of bowling something. Excellent fielding all-round especially in the conditions shoutout to Steve even nursing an injury and expecting a call at any time to go and catch some bad guys
At the change Tillingham 212 with the wind increasing and the temperature decreasing it was going to be tough. A Brown and Beames opened the batting and Woodham were 1 down early when Beames chased a wide one from Taylor and was caught. This brought Gav to the crease and him and Brown batted well together Brown especially always finding a quick single on the 6th ball of every over
Gav then played on bringing in "Sigourney" to the crease. A Brown then went onto get a well-played 50 before drinks and in my humble opinion should be classed as performance of the year not just the month (thanks for the beer Browny). We wouldn't be Woodham without a collapse and from a strong position at drinks we were blown over by a combination of wind and Tillingham bowlers. A late 20 from Collis made the score look a bit more respectable with him and Brown finishing not out.
It was an honour to captain a great team in what was a very fun match played in the right spirit with our friends from Tillingham. Until my next time with the arm band I bid you a fond farewell.
