Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 144 runs
Match report
On another glorious summer's day, the 1's took the field for the final time in the season, knowing that only a win against champions elect Great Waltham, and defeat for Ilford would prevent a fall through the Division One trap door.
Winning the toss for only the second time this season, skipper Wright elected to field. That looked a great decision when in the first over, Clout (by nature) dispatched second and final balls of the first over for six. However, revenge, albeit fortuitous, was soon to be had, Clout playing on for 12. The early success continued, as Wright trapped Harris in front and then bowled Fitzwater to leave the hosts 33-3. Elles and Bloom prevented further losses and put together a decent stand and despite the introduction of Craig Platt and Sam Norman, took the score to three figures. It was a change to spin that finally separated the pair, as Ollie Glasson induced a big shot from Elles (47) which went straight up in the air, and was comfortably pouched by glovesman Fannon.
Another decent partnership was forged, as Bloom and Duggan steadily built before becoming more expansive. Just as Bloom produced a patient and well made 50, Ollie struck again, trapping the visiting keeper in front. Duggan shortly followed, as the Glasson/Fannon combination did the trick again. At 157-6, the game was well poised. Enter Lewis Chapman, who blasted a century in the reverse fixture. His liking to WMCC began again and he quickly found his range. Together with Josh Fitzwater, the seventh wicket soon yielded 50, as the visitors honed in on maximum batting points. Whilst Fiztwater was eventually dismissed for 27, Chapman smashed 57 from just 33 balls, as the innings concluded on 224-7.
During the tea break, some much needed rain fell and gave the pitch a bit of juicing ahead of the run chase. Dan Smith was the first to fall, feathering a nick to keeper Bloom to depart for 6. The next passage of play was an enthralling one as Damian Abeyratna and Craig played with real purpose and freedom, as the first 10 overs went for 68 - if the rain returned now, the 1's were well ahead on Duckworth Lewis.
However, no rain, just a clatter of wickets then fell, once Abey had departed for a run a ball 30, sealing his position as top run scorer for the season. With Craig (27) to shortly follow Abey back to the pavillion, there then ensued an all too familiar procession that we have seen at other points during the season, as remarkably 73-1 became 98 all out, with Mark Chapman picking up 5-7 in that time.
Defeat, and ultimately relegation in what has been quite a challenging season. However, this is the highest level that the club has ever competed at - a fact that the players that have got the team there, can be proud of. I thank each and every one of those that put their bodies on the line every week in what has been a tough year.
Looking ahead to 2022 campaign, there will be a new skipper at the helm, as after 10 seasons I have decided to step down from the captaincy. It has been a pleasure and an honour to lead the team for that length of time and I thank all those players that have helped to progress the club up the leagues during that time and making summer Saturday's so enjoyable. I wish my successor all the very best.
Until then....
Kev.
