Basildon & Pitsea CC 1st XI v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 14 Aug 2021 at 13:00
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 89 runs

Match report It was very much a case of what might have been as the 1's travelled to promotion hunting Basildon and Pitsea. Winning the toss and batting first, the home side started well, particularly through Leonard who showed his pedigree with some good quality stroke play. At the other end, fellow opener Daw found the going more tricky, and it was no surprise when he hit a delivery from Toby Pateman straight to the waiting Damian Abeyratna at point. Davies proved a better partner, and the two left handers got the run-rate up to 5 an over.

It was a change of bowling that did the trick, as Sam Norman trapped Leonard (43) in front. 69-2 from the first 15. The subsequent overs to the drinks break then took a remarkable turn. Firstly, the home side accelerated to 91-2 from 17. Amazingly, by the end of the 21st over, Basildon found themselves eight down as Toby and Stormin ripped out the middle order with four wickets apiece as the home dressing room became a revolving door.

Thompson had not read the script, and post drinks, there was a concerted effort to eek out as much time and runs as possible. Thompson went one better, and supported by Bonnett, put on 35 for the ninth wicket. The final wicket stand was even more crucial as Thompson and skipper Bedford put on 56, easily the highest partnership of the innings. Finally, just after reaching a well made 50, Thompson was removed by Dan Smith, to conclude the innings on 198.

The shift in momentum certainly impacted the run chase, and with no batter unable to spend enough time at the crease, not enough of a significant impact could be made, with wickets falling a regular intervals and partnerships not really formed. In fact, only two players made it into double figures, with the unorthodox style of Jack Preston winning the day, as his 16 just ousted the 12 of Dan. Dean Bedford picked up a five-wicket haul, and it was that man Thompson again who drew the game to a close, with 4-10 to add to his earlier 50 - a match-winning performance.

So defeat by 89 runs a much greater margin than it should or could have been, but positives to take from the excellent performances with the ball by Toby (4-44) and Sam (4-49).

With a gap in the fixture list next week, we have just the one left to play, as we host champions elect Great Waltham at the Pheasantry, where our inevitable departure from Division One can hopefully be concluded on a high.

Until then..
