Terling v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 89 runs
Match report
Mmmmm. The sticky mid-season continued for the 1's as they suffered a third defeat in a row, this time at the hands of Terling, going down by 89 runs.
Fielding first, it did not take long for Toby Pateman to strike, Wilding nicking to slip, Dan Smith taking the catch. Early inroads to the top order did not materialise as Govender and Taylor batted well, Govender particularly going after anything pitched up and seeking to clear the infield, as both he and the home side made their way to 50. A bowling change had the desired effect as George Verlander induced a nick from Govender (57), well taken by glovesman Andy Smith. With the score still on 78, a lifting delivery from Roger Marshall took the edge of Taylor's bat, and looped toward the slip cordon. Just as it looked as though the ball would fall short, the telescopic right arm of Dan reached out to clutch the ball inches from the ground - an excellent catch. When George picked up his second wicket shortly afterwards, Terling found themselves 87-4.
O Dawson and Wager with 25 apiece slowly rebuilt the innings, but it was the innings of home skipper K Dawson that was most crucial, as he hit a quick fire half-century. He was eventually dismissed for 62, making the most of a dropped catch early into his innings to help propel the score to 219-7 at the close, a total far higher than it should have been.
It would be fair to say that the run chase never really got going at all, as opening bowling pair O Dawson and G Woolfenden picked up 6 wickets between them. The 1's 38-6 from the opening 14 overs.
Resistance did come from Kev Wright (28), Andy Smith (43) and Roger Marshall (22) - Kev and Andy putting on 31 - Andy and Roger 56, as a batting bonus point was acrued. However when both were dismissed on 125, the game was nearly done. Woodham old boy John Marshall helped to complete the innings, a catch at short cover to remove George, and with it consigning the visitors to a comprehensive defeat.
A disappointing result and performance, with the team well beaten. For the second week running, with ball in hand an opposing batsman has punished us when he has been given a life, whilst with the bat early wickets have tumbled.
Hopefully just a blip before things click back into place and there is no better opportunity when hosting leaders Noak Hill next Saturday to cause a surprise - the pressure very much on the opponents to retain momnetum in their promotion bid. Unitl then...
