Rayleigh 2nd v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 8 wkts
Match report
With the regular Skipper taking a much deserved break to Devon and Cornwall the captaincy was entrusted to A. Brown having had previous experience with the 2nd XI and Sunday teams. The pressure was on the stand in skipper as Woodham were visiting Rayleigh who's previous best result was a tie the week before. On by far the hottest day of the year so far the stand in captain made no friends within his team as he lost the toss and was duly asked to spend the first session in the field. Rumours circulated that this was the preferred option anyway as everyone tried there best to keep spirits as high as the Mercury was rising in the early afternoon sun.
Fresh from getting married the previous week Roger Marshall was given the new ball from the bottom end and he seemed to relish to opportunity finding some early bounce in an otherwise placid pitch. Toby Pateman backed Roger up admirably keeping things tight to start with but as both bowlers tired the opening pair of Turner and Ellis started to get on top and the runs started to flow. This brought about a double change an over before the 1st of 3 drinks breaks was taken for the day with Dan Smith replacing Roger and Sam Norman replacing the unlucky Toby who's figures were looking good until a 19 run 5th over.
The opening pair remained untroubled as both passed 50 until Ellis, fresh from a century the week before, tried to take on the long straight boundary and only succeeded in picking out the reliable Shipton for the first wicket of the match with the score on 113 in the 19th Over. As usually happens after a good partnership we didn't have to wait long for the next wicket as Manoj Tripathi replacing Norman bowled Turner for 62 in his first over to bring the 2nd drinks break up with the score at 130-2. Initially the runs continued to flow as No. 3 Nolde scored at more than a run a ball for his 19. Thankfully this charge was broken as Nolde picked out Toby Pateman off the bowling of D. Smith who followed that wicket up with another in the same over bowling J. Walker for 0. These two wickets slowed the run rate down as B. Walker and home captain C. Frost looked to consolidate. The pair built a good partnership as the bowlers were rotated. As the partnership passed 50 it was Toby Pateman who made the breakthrough with a good catch of his own bowling dismissing B. Walker for 28. Rayleigh took this as their opportunity to increase the run rate although this also gave opportunities for wickets as Pateman picked up another and a good slip catch by Dan Smith gave Sam Norman a deserved wicket having bowled a good second spell.
Rayleigh finishing their innings on 255-7 leaving C. Frost not out on 44. A good effort in the field and with the ball from Woodham especially in the 2nd half of the innings as a score closer to 300 seemed on at some stage.
A slight reshuffle at tea as Captain Brown had tweaked his groin in the first innings so dropped down the order meant that it was Smith and Ian Ball to open the innings. The Rayleigh openers bowled well to these two with Ably especially unlucky seeing Smith dropped on a number of occasions. Maybe the pressure of knowing how big a wicket the Woodham opener was to their chances of winning the match getting to some of them. During this opening spell Smith suffered the largest of set backs as he finally broke his trusted CA bat. This seemed to faze the normally quick scoring Smith as Ball started to catch up his opening partner as the partnership surpassed 50. It was change bowler J Walker who finally broke the partnership inducing an edge from the bat of Ball to end his stay on 26.
This brought Manoj Tripathi to the crease who calmly ensured that quick wickets were not to fall in a similar manner to the first innings and giving Smith the opportunity to knock his new bat in throughout his innings. Manoj finally departing 9 from 27 balls supporting Smith well during a partnership just shy of 70. With the run rate increasing and Smith becoming increasingly tired boundaries were sought and duly found. No. 4 D. Hunt sensibly rotated the strike picking up 11 all in singles to ensure that Smith enjoyed most of the strike as his maiden T-Rippon century of the season was brought up. This seemed to open the floodgates as Smith quickly moved through the gears passing 150. Rayleigh tried to stem the flow of runs by rotating their bowlers but nothing would stop Smith from chasing the total almost single-handedly. As the runs continued it was marked that this innings could surpass the previous highest individual Woodham total of 175 held by Matt Goodlad. Smith duly ended all doubt of this as he kept crashing the ball to the boundary completing the run chase and finishing on 180*.
A potential Banana skin dodged in the end due to a superb individual performance by Dan Smith with match figures of 10-0-40-3 and a truly remarkable 180*. Congratulations on a fantastic innings despite the hot weather and loss of your dear friend CA.
As we pass the halfway stage Woodham are in a good position of 5th in the table as we welcome back our Captain for the trip to High Roding to play the reverse of the abandoned season opener.
