Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Rayleigh Fairview on Sat 14 Jul 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 13 runs
Match report
With the club stricken with availability issues it was remarkable that 21 players were selected to wear the pheasant on another sweltering Saturday in Chelmsford. Makeshift teams represented both first and second teams respectively.
The first team missing 5 regulars, Skipper Wright, Dan ‘Runs’ Smith (some people call him Biffta), George ‘Jeevsey’ Verlander and the ever present Marshall contingent. Danny Hunt was also taken out of the fold late due to unexpected circumstances meaning birthday boy Cookie was called up after an early night, Happy 30th! (Could pass for 30 anyway mate)
With stand in Skipper Roderick winning the toss and electing to bat a new look order was written into the scorebook and off set O.Glasson plus Manoj Tripathi to play upon another lovely new Nathan Hayman wicket.
It was a solid start from the pair with opposing skipper D.Lawson bowling tightly from one end the odd boundary ball from Turner was dispatched by both batsman. It took a change of bowling to break the 37 stand when an average ball from McLean was placed into the hands of point by Glasson ‘a ball I could’ve put anywhere’ muttered ollie as he walked off.
He was adamant he was watching his runs being scored off the bats of the continuing Manoj and Rod. Both played excellently, Teapathi bringing up another half century before being adjudged LBW, a good inning, the score on 96 from 23 overs 2 wickets down.
It was at this point Rod gave up on running, a combination of heat and batting at 3 got to his head and proceeded to dominate the Fairview bowling scoring all around the ground. Just before his 50, partner Smithy was lost bowled by Collins after a couple of sweetly struck boundaries for 13.
Aussie Beames joined Rod with the run rate increasing at just the right time until the skipper was lost caught in the deep for 60, one run off prediction of son Rufus that very same morning.
Contributions from Beames, Shipton and Pateman took the hosts to 243 off the allotted 45. Shipton Hitting 3 sixes in an over to the short boundary was a pivotal moment.
During tea, Rod was said to be looking for capable bowlers to help defend the score by the woodies and take early wickets, instead he found Pateman, Mitchell to open the bowling, the two set about their work either way.
With 4 catches going down in the first 5 overs, the first team were overjoyed when Peggy Mitchell clung onto a caught and bowled chance from A.Jellett to take the first wicket.
Finally the two settled into their work and lines were tightened and more chances were induced, Beames holding onto chance from Pateman followed by Pateman inducing a fair bit of moment to bowl Tremain round his legs.
Skipper Rod rung the changes and tossed the ball to Manoj who before today had only previously bowled one over for Woodham in first team cricket, turned out to be a great call as he produced a wicket with his first ball and bowled 10 through, finishing with figures of 1-27 in what would turn out to be a match defining spell.
Meanwhile at the other end Gavindar Cook set about his work bowling luscious leg breaks taking wickets at regular intervals. Some wickets were good, some not so good but 5 wickets are 5 wickets and Gav deserved every one of them today. This included the big wicket of McLean cheaply and the skipper D.Lawson who had batted well for 51.
Fairview were not out of the game at this point despite all these wickets, D.Jellett came in at 9 and look assured from the start, he took a liking to a Harness over and brought Fairview into the game needing 25 from 18.
This quickly became 21 from 17 as Pateman came back to bowl, however things turned again in the Woodies favour as Ollie and Toby combined and the next 11 balls only went for 6. 15 needed from the final over with one wicket remaining, the third ball provided the wicket with Collins chipping to Rod at mid wicket.
Special mention to D.Jellett for finishing 45* from 36 balls, a commendable effort.
The unlikely combination of Woodham players had won by 13 runs with contributions coming from all players.
