High Roding v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 8 wkts
Match report
The splendour of High Roding was the venue for the latest 1's match - and a chance to get back on the winning trail after a disappointing loss the previous week against South Weald.
Winning the toss for the sixth consecutive time, the visitors elected to bat on what looked an excellent track. After last weeks disaster with the bat, openers Rod Brazier and Toby Pateman were understandably watchful throughout the opening overs, forging a decent and solid partnership. The pair had put on 40, until change bowler Gallop dismissed Rod, caught for 15. The old adage of one bringing two certainly proved true and Toby shortly followed, holing out to mid-off to depart for 17. The 'brothers' Smith were brought to the crease and batted well together, steadily increasing the run rate. The pair had taken the total into three figures, when Andy was the next wicket to fall, caught at cover for 19. Just as he was starting to gain momentum, Dan became the fourth wicket of the innings, falling to an excellent catch at long-on by Burns, dismissed for a near run a ball 42. The innings stalled a little, as overs 32-40 yielded just 27 runs, the 1's going into the final five overs with the total on 151. Some late innings hitting was required, and it did come, as an unbeaten run a ball 20 from Jack Shipton, a brisk 28 from just 20 balls from Pete Harness, including a huge six into a neighbouring garden. Kev Wright hit 16 from the final over to propel the score to 204-6 at the close, 53 coming from the final five.
It transpired that many more were needed to set a defendable score. The High Roding openers played with greater freedom and took some risks as the runs flowed. Duke was well caught by Dan off the bowling of George Verlander to give an early scalp at 35-1, but the innings was littered with missed opportunities - five catches going down, including three off opener Molloy at various stages of his innings. Both Molloy, who finished unbeaten on 100 and Gallop (57) made the visitors pay. The High Roding innings was probably best summed up when Roger Marshall took aim and fire at the stumps to run out Gallop. His shy was successful, with the batsman well short of his ground. However, in the intervening period, Keith Mitchell had inadvertently trod on the stumps to effectively void the run-out. A microcosm of the second half of the match, if it could go wrong, it did. There was some consolation with an additional bowling point collected when Jack caught Gallop off the bowling of Toby, but it was too little too late, as High Roding completed victory with plenty to spare to deservedly run out winners by 8 wkts.
An improved performance with the bat in comparison to seven days ago, though as it transpired a much bigger total was required. Harsh lessons are being learnt at this level in all disciplines but the team should learn quickly from them and be better players and stronger for it.
It is still relatively early in the season, and in a division where all teams are beating each other, there are plenty of opportunities to find form and climb the table. We return to the Pheasantry next Saturday for the visit of Eastwood.
