Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v South Weald on Sat 02 Jun 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 121 runs
Match report
Fourth faced second as the 1’s entertained South Weald, relegated from Div 1 last season.
Under cloudy skies, skipper Wright continued his 100% record on the toss and inserted the visitors. It was the skipper who made early inroads into the top order, removing Long in the first over and following that up by removing Chambers and Hull. South Weald 27-3 in the first ten.
In form Lingala (67) was joined by Palmer (41) and the pair got the visitors back on track with an impressive stand. Lingala had looked set for a big score when he tried to scoop a George Verlander delivery over his head, but succeeded in finding Keith Mitchell. Palmer was closing on 50 until he picked out Pete Harness in the covers, safely pouching to earn birthday boy Roger Marshall’s first wicket of the day.
Roger followed that success by trapping Pye in front for 4, but Bottleman (34) ensured that the visitors would post at least 150 plus. Some late hitting from Owers (36) helped to propel the score beyond 200, and despite a late couple of wickets for Keith, the visitors posted 211-9 at the close.
The run chase? Oh the run chase.. The first 10 overs were calamitous, with the dressing room operating a revolving door policy as wickets tumbled. When Nigel Costin was dismissed to earn Chambers his fourth wicket, the hosts were in all sorts of trouble at 16-6 and thoughts of the 36 at Chadwell Heath resurfacing.
Mercifully, there was some late order resistance, as the skipper and Rog put on a stand of 24 – ended when Wright (19) somehow managed to drag on. Rog, together with brother John continued to put some respectability into the proceedings, putting together a partnership of 32, John (25) with the bulk of those. Unfortunately both fell and the game was almost up – 76-9.
The final pair of George and Keith were starting to establish a partnership of their own, George the third to get into double figures, before the game was brought to an abrupt halt in the 34th over, when a bouncer from Pye hit a sans tin lid Keith on the head. Thankfully Keith was soon able to get back to his feet but on the sound advice of medic man Pateman, it was decided that the game should end there, a sensible decision given the state of the game.
So a defeat by a sizeable margin in the end, against a team that will surely be toward the top of the league throughout the season. Nevertheless despite a creditable performance with ball and in the field, much more application with the bat is required if the team is going to succeed at this level and put back to back wins together.
Onto the next one and back on the road, with a trip to High Roding.
