Rayleigh Fairview v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 12 May 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 58 runs

Match report After last weeks opening victory against Terling, the 1's were again away from home, this time at fellow promoted side Rayleigh Fairview.

Winning toss and inserting the hosts, following a period of rain before the game got underway, it wasn't quite the plan that it took 29 overs to claim the first wicket. Bowling up to that point had generally been ok, but too often a four ball was presented to Rayleigh, who capitalised, as openers Jellett (65) and Worship (46) provided a solid base for the hosts. However, a change of bowling to bring Dan Smith and Toby Pateman into the attack finally proved the breakthrough. 115-0 soon became 115-2 with both openers dismissed as the 1's started to claw their way back into the game. Wickets now started to fall at a much more regular rate and the run rate continued to slow. Aside from a couple of cameos from McClean (22) and J Lawson (19), none of the other Fairview batsman made it past ten as Dan (4-44) and Toby (6-33) (a second 6 fer for the club)( shared the 10 wickets between them, reducing Rayleigh to 193 all out from 44.2 overs.

The chase began well as Rod Brazier and Andy Smith took the attack to the home bowlers. After cracking a couple of boundaries from a D Lawson over, Smith (23) was the first to fall, the bowler getting revenge, clipping the off-stump. Rod and Dan Smith continued, Dan hitting a huge six of McClean to continue the excellent start - 50-1 from the first 12 overs. The hosts had other ideas, and J. Lawson accounted for both Rod and Dan - both departing for 16.

The wickets continued to tumble, with the 1's reduced to 93-7 at one stage. Skipper Wright and Roger Marshall provided a fightback, putting on a stand of 31 until Rog picked out the tallest fielder at mid-on, well caught by J. Lawson for 19. With Roger's dismissal, the momentum of the chase soon evaporated, and when Wright was caught behind for 27, the innings closed on 135 -defeat by 58 runs.

A disappointing defeat in a game that was more than winnable. Too many runs gifted ultimately proved the difference, though the chase could have been better. Still early season and little bit of rustiness that will surely be chipped off in the forthcoming weeks. Next up, finally a home game as the 1's host old friends Havering at Pheasant Park.
