Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Old Chelmsfordians 2nd on Sat 05 Aug 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 1 wkt
Match report
Phew....! Who said cricket wasn't entertaining? Another week, and for the second time of the season, a nail biting final wicket partnership to deliver victory by the narrowest of 1 wkt margins.
At Galleywood it was a Verlander/Mitchell combo that took the 1's to victory, this time it was Roger Marshall & Gav Cook who shared a crucial stand of 25 to get the team over the line as WASP weakly buzzed.
Electing to bat first, the bottom placed visitors began well, and despite the early loss of Landers, were handily placed on 67-1 from the opening 10 overs.
If the opening exchanges belonged to the visitors, it was the 1's that got on top in the next phase of the innings, as Roger Marshall (1-29) and the scourge of OC's in the away fixture, Toby Pateman (3-42) removed Grainger (35) and Bucknall (34).
It was left to Abbott to virtually play a lone hand for much of the innings, as the spin twins of Biffta and Gav made further inroads into the run rate, bowling a collective 4-50 from 16 overs, Gav 3, Biffta 1.
Abbott went past 50, and remained whilst others played supporting roles. It was skipper Verlander that finally removed the OC's number 4 for a fine 66, OC's eventually all out for 185 from 43.1 overs.
Losing two early wickets in reply was not the ideal start, as both Nigel Costin and Manoj Tripathi fell to Lodge. 8-2. Still, with Biffta joined by the overseas pro M. Beames, stability was restored. A partnership of 40 in 10 overs was just what was required, but was ended as Dan departed for 28.
Shippo, elevated to 5 obviously had somewhere to go after the game as he tanked along at well over a run a ball. However, both he (30 from 17 balls) and Beames (15) fell in quick succession, putting the game into the balance at 103-5.
Still with Toby finding form once more with the bat, progress to the target continued to be made. Two good partnerships of 34 and 20 with Pete Harness and skipper GV respectively had pushed the chase beyond 150. However, when 164 had been reached the reply really hit the buffers, as first Toby (43) and then Craig were dismissed in the 38th over.
The big screen (ok - picture it) said 22 to win. Plenty of balls remained, but in that perilous position of the final pair. Slowly but surely, the runs started to come, predominately in singles with the crowd, including the victorious 2's, on the edge of their seats.
With 16 required from 18, it was game on. The over proved to be the crucial one, as two fours from Roger brought the target into single figures. 5 from 14, a win now tantalisingly in sight.
4 from 12, 3 from 11, and then a two from Gav which brought the scores level. With the equation 1 from 6 balls, the field were brought in and Rog crashed the first delivery of the last over to the fence to bring victory!
A narrow win, but a crucial one as leaders Rayleigh Fairview lost to Galleywood. Two key games coming up in the next fortnight, as we visit the leaders next week and host Galleywood in two weeks time.
First, a key challenge in the battle for the title - as we visit Fairview, seeking to avenge the defeat earlier in the season.
The run in is looking very interesting....!
