Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Noak Hill Tav 1st on Sat 22 Jul 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 45 runs
Match report
The hot summer was temporarily interrupted by rain which affected many of the league fixtures across the county, including Pheasant Park. Oddly, the last time inclement weather appeared on a Saturday was the reverse fixture with Noak Hill. Whereas the 1’s triumphed that day, it was the visitors on this occasion that gained revenge, achieving victory by 45 runs.
Electing to bowl first, the hosts kept the visitors run-rate to around 2-3 an over for the opening 20, with the returning George Verlander recording impressive figures of 0-20 from his allotted 10. Wickets fell at a regular rate, but it was the mid-innings contributions of Raza (20), Don (25) and especially Rahman (59) which would prove crucial as Noak Hill increased their run-rate significantly in the second half of their innings.
The visitors eventually posted 190 all out, a good 20-30 more than had looked likely earlier in the innings. Keith Mitchell (4-52) and Kev Wright (3-35) the main wicket takers. It was great to see Chris Shaw in 1’s action, his final match before relocating to Surrey, where we wish him well. His 10 over spell arguably deserved more than the one wicket he earnt.
During tea, a fine Jack Shipton production, the rains fell and cast doubt over the second innings. However, with rain eventually stopping and both teams willing to give it a go, it was under cloudy skies and on a patchwork quilt of sawdust that the reply got underway at 5.40pm.
Two early wickets fell, as Andy & Dan Smith were dismissed by Rahman and Rafique respectively. Stability came as Rod and Toby forged a good partnership, ticking along at around 3 an over. On the eve of drinks Toby departed, edging to slip, 66-3. The next wicket was crucial, as Rod, closing in on a determined 50, became Jogia’s first victim of the afternoon. 77-4.
Jack & Manu took the score into three figures, but when Jack was dismissed for 18, it triggered a mini-collapse, as 102-4 soon became 110-7. The outlook had become as bleak as the dark skies above. Unfortunately, the rain failed to materialise as did the runs required with the reply eventually concluding on 145.
Whilst conditions were a contributory factor to defeat, so were the late runs that the visitors were able to score. Nevertheless, a risk worth taking in an effort to win the game and credit to both sides for giving it a go, much as we did in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.
A little ground lost in the title race as leaders Rayleigh Fairview escaped the rain to beat bottom side OC’s, extending the gap at the top to 18 points in the process. However, with other games in the league abandoned due to rain, little was ultimately lost in the bid for promotion, with the gap to third now 50 points.
Next up, the return leg against High Easter, under the stewardship of Colonel Brazier.
