Purleigh v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts
Match report
The 1's got back to winning ways, continuing their unbeaten away record with a 5 wkt victory at near neighbours Purleigh.
In a low scoring match on a wicket that looked as though it may offer some assistance for the bowlers, the toss was crucial. Visiting skipper Wright won the toss and duly elected to insert the hosts.
Success was immediate, as Taylor was bowled around his legs without score in the first over. It was soon 3-2 as Wright struck again, Oliver caught low down by Roger stationed at point.
Two wickets in quick succession, one including the key wicket of Purleigh skipper Freegard, a first of the afternoon for John, helped to reduce the hosts to 23-4. When Wright accounted for Barrick (4) lofting a chance to Toby, Purleigh found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 34-5. By the time that the first 20 overs had been bowled, Purleigh were still short of the 50 mark - Kev 4-10 and John 1-30 from their respective 10.
The change bowling continued the flow of wickets, as Roger picked up two wickets and Peggy one, Purleigh 65-8 from 29 overs. Some late order hitting from Yasin (13) & Reeves (9) did give the scorecard some respectability, but when the former holed out to an excellent catch from Craig running in from the deep off Peggy, the end was nigh. And so it proved as Roger induced a nick from Reeves, well taken by Smithy behind the sticks - Purleigh all out for 88 in 36.2 overs.
Still with a wicket that had offered plenty of interest for the bowlers throughout, the chase would still be a tricky one. A fine square cut for four off the first ball from Rod set the tone, but with bowler M. John starting well the contest was on. Next over, the opener got one through the defences of Rod (8)- the visitors 10-1 from 3. It could easily have been 2 straightaway, as John induced an edge from Dan first up - but home skipper Freegard shelled the chance. A big moment in the match.
A second wicket did soon fall, as change bowler Yasin got one to dart in off the pitch to castle Smithy for 10. 18-2.
After a bumpy start, waters were calmed as Dan & Toby dug in. Pressure was eased a little in the 10th over, as Yasin got hit for 17, though another catching opportunity, a third life for Dan, went begging.
With the partnership on 33, and the visitors now beyond 50, WMCC's ability to shoot themselves in the foot appeared again, as indecision between the batsmen led them both to ground their bats at the same end - and try as he might to get to the other end - Toby was well short, heading back to the pavilion for 7 - after he had done the hard graft to get in.
Manoj shortly followed, nicking to slip off Yasin, where Taylor took a good low catch. 53-4. John had continued to bowl well and after having two chances spurned finally got the wicket of Dan, bowling WMCC's no 3 for an invaluable 34. 65-5 - surely we could get over the line?
Step forward Jack Shipton & Craig Marshall - who once had seen off the bowling of John, climbed into the change bowling, hitting crucial boundaries to get ever closer to the target. Jack finished with a flourish, crashing Oliver to the fence 4 times in one over, securing victory for the visitors by 5 wkts in 21.5 overs.
Back to winning ways on a tricky surface, but an excellent bowling and fielding performance set the platform for victory, with the batsman doing well to get through what was always going to be a challenging chase.
At the halfway stage of the season we are well placed, tucked in 2nd behind Rayleigh Fairview and well clear of the chasing promotion pack.
Next up, incredibly, it is back to our first opponents Broomfield, who have improved hugely in recent weeks, and will offer a stern test at Pheasant Park next Sat.
