Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Rayleigh Fairview 1st on Sat 10 Jun 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 6 wkts
Match report
After a week dominated by the General Election, it was apt that the top two ‘parties’ in Division Three went head to head as the 1’s entertained 2nd placed Rayleigh Fairview, seeking to increase their majority at the top of the table.
It was fitting, or ironic therefore, that the match was dominated by Osbourne (Will, not the other one) with a fine display of bowling, returning excellent figures of 6-10 that were ultimately decisive in dismissing the 1’s for just 92 and earning the visitors a 6 wkt win.
The hosts showed two changes from the last match, with GV returning and with Rod ill, suffering an ‘exit poll’ of his own, Nigel Costin returned to the fray, with Toby replacing Rod in the opening slot, after a successful recent campaign to claim the ‘seat’. (Ok, I’ll stop it now).
The visitors won the toss and elected to field.
The opening overs were intriguing, as the hosts took ten off the first over, and then proceeded to find themselves 27-5 in the 6th over, as Lawson and Osbourne shared the spoils between them, including a beauty from Osbourne to remove the prolific Dan Smith. Thankfully Manoj & John stuck to the task in hand and stopped the flow of wickets. Though runs were hard to come by, that mattered little as stability was needed.
It wasn’t until the 18th over that John’s patience finally ended, as he was stumped off the bowling of D Lawson for 7. Nevertheless the partnership of 19 – which would turn out to be the highest of the innings – did put the train temporarily back on track.
Manoj continued to be the glue that held the innings together, though the hosts were shakier than an Ikea table, and continued to fall victim to the pace and accuracy of Osbourne, who remarkably clean bowled all his victims. Finally, after a vigil lasting 86 balls, Manoj holed out seeking to get the team to three figures. He fell for a hard fought 31, as the hosts posted a paltry 92, all out by 3pm.
After a supreme Toby tea, spoilt a little by the fact that it had to be taken so early, out the teams went again for the Rayleigh response. The skipper & GV bowled well making scoring difficult.
Both earned a wicket either side of double run-out joy, yet again involving Jack Shipton, who is making a habit of dismissing opposition batsman in this way – though the first of the run-outs owed much to the athleticism and awareness of Craig Marshall at mid-wicket.
At 28-4 from 15 overs the hosts were well in the game. A couple of sharp chances off the bowling of Dan Smith came and went and gradually Rayleigh were able to assert themselves a little more, putting away the odd four ball as their small target began to shrink evermore. It was great credit to the 1’s that it took until the 31st over for the visitors to get over the line as Ames struck two successive fours to deservedly seal the game.
A first defeat for the 1’s, but great credit to Rayleigh and particularly Osbourne for an outstanding display. Nevertheless, the gap at the top of the table remains 11 points, still giving the team a strong mandate for the challenges ahead that we will face throughout the season.
Next stop Galleywood, where we hope to get back on track at the first attempt.
