Old Chelmsfordians 2nd v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 118 runs
Match report
An unbeaten 100, a third of the season for Dan Smith, and a six-wicket haul for Toby Pateman, including a hat-trick, were the standout performances as the 1's continued their unbeaten start to the season with victory at bottom side OC's.
After torrential rain yesterday, it was little surprise when the hosts won the toss, that they inserted the visitors.
On a slow paced pitch, scoring was not particularly fluid with boundaries a rarity for Rod Brazier and the returning Andy Smith. The pair did produce a partnership of 35, until Rod miscued a flick to leg, caught for 10.
Joined by in-form Dan, the 'Smith's' took the score to 57 at 15 over drinks. The break and change in umpires had an immediate effect, as Andy was trapped in front, lbw to Critchell for 20. Toby, elevated to 4 provided a solid partner for Dan, and the pair pushed the score to three figures. With the second drinks break beckoning, Toby was dismissed, by an excellent one-handed catch on the move by Norman.
Dan passed 50 for the fourth time of the league season and started to find the rope with greater regularity, particularly the shorter legside boundary. Brief stays at the crease for Manoj (7), Jack (18) and Wright (7) provided support at the other end as Dan moved ever closer to his third hundred of the season. This he achieved with four overs remaining, another excellent knock and again the glue that held the innings together. A late flurry took Dan to an unbeaten 126 at the close, Roger 4 not out at the other as the 1's posted an impressive 243-6.
A change of tactic saw a different opening bowling partnership, as Keith Mitchell joined the skipper. This paid early dividends as in his first over, Keith claimed a wicket, as Kitchener cut straight to Roger at point who made no mistake.
The early wicket was the only one to fall in the first 15 overs, as tight bowling and watchful batting from Landers and Norman saw the hosts to the first drinks break one down, but scoring at less than three an over.
It took a change of bowling to break the second wicket partnership, as John Marshall entered the fray and bowled Landers for 20. Brother Craig joined in, as Cranfield (12) picked out Roger perfectly at mid-wicket.
With the hosts a long way from the target and showing little intent in chasing the total, on a flat pitch, wickets were difficult to come by. Post 30 overs drinks, Roger finally induced an edge behind from Cook. Still six wickets stood between the 1's and a full points haul. With Barnstone joining Norman and looking comfortable, a different tack was required. The ball was thrown to Toby to see if he could find a breakthrough. He did - and how! He soon ended Norman's long stay at the crease, as the hosts no 3 top edged to Craig at mid-wicket to depart for 43.
The wicket of Barnstone was key, as this would expose the lower order. Toby induced a big shot, which found Rod waiting on the cover boundary. The combination worked twice more, as Rod became a magnet for the ball - taking two further catches at short cover and point. Could Thomas stand up to the hat-trick ball? No was the answer as Toby yorked the no 9 to claim and with it a five-wicket haul. A tremendous effort in just 4 overs. For good measure, Toby also took the final wicket of the innings, bowling Brown as the hosts were bowled out for 125.
A full compliment of points again for the 1's, and the lead at the top of the Div 3 table has been stretched to 34 points.
Next up, a top of the table clash, as we welcome second placed Rayleigh Fairview to Pheasant Park.
