Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Great Baddow 2nd on Sat 13 May 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 6 wkts
Match report
The 1's climbed to the top of Division Three with an emphatic victory over Great Baddow.
With the coin landing Jemima Puddleduck side up, home skipper Wright inserted the hosts on another good looking Pheasant Park track.
After an initial slow start, the visitors opening pair of Bowring and Scott started to accelerate quickly, often taking an aerial route to the boundary. At 50 without loss from the first 10 overs, something needed to change. And change it did. The skipper removed himself from the attack and introduced John Marshall. The impact was far greater than was expected. In his first over, John removed Bowring with one that came onto the bat quicker than he anticipated, skying the ball to brother Craig at mid-wicket, who duly took the catch. The regular cry of one bringing two was never more apt, as in the same over, new bat Lazurus called the dangerous Scott through for a single that was never on. Craig & John combined to run Scott out with the visitors opener stranded. A huge bonus wicket and the turning point of the innings.
Momentum shifted and the hosts went on the attack, with great success. An inspired piece of fielding from Jack Shipton helped to trigger a batting collapse, throwing down the stumps from deepish mid-on - Lazurus short of his ground. Whilst GV bowled tightly at one end, John was taking wickets at will, earning his first WMCC 'five-fer' in the process, aided by some excellent close catching, not one chance going begging.
The visitors had subsided from 55-0 to 75-8. Roger Marshall removed the remaining batsmen as just a further 16 were added, Great Baddow 91 all out in just 23.2 overs, John finishing with figures of 7-2-21-6.
After a splendid GV tea, taken at the uncustomary time of 2.40pm, the hosts set about the chase. Andy Smith clattered a ball through the covers for four, but perished the next ball, looping a catch to point.
Opener Haley was getting the ball through during his spell, and accounted for both Rod Brazier(9)and Baddow old boy Biffta, but not before he had hit a quickfire 24. It was good to see a return to form for Manoj Tripathi, as he and Toby Pateman took the home side closer to the victory target. Toby was trapped in front for an unlucky 13, but by that point the team were just 13 runs from home.
With victory all but sealed, Manoj thought he may have been dismissed, caught at gully, but an alert GV noticed that bowler Pannell had knocked the bails off during his delivery. No-ball. With that reprieve, Manoj hit the next ball for four, securing the victory for the home side by 6 wkts, with plenty of time and overs to spare - the game concluding at 4.20pm.
John will take the plaudits for his six-wicket haul, but it was backed by an excellent display in the field, on what was a very good surface again at Pheasant Park.
Next week, a trip to Noak Hill Taverners, where we hope to repeat our success of last season.
