Match report
As the legendary wordsmith Meatloaf mused, two of out three aint bad. However, in the world of cricket, and in this latest BDICL Div 1 instalment, ain't bad should read not quite good enough.
Against reigning champions Coggeshall, the 1's were immediately on the attack, with Ian Ball diving full length to catch his nemesis Edwards (both are locked at the top of most leagues runs accumulated in Div 1). A wicket for Chris Shaw.
This start set the tone for an exceptional bowling and fielding performance, with outstanding catches supporting some probing bowling. 0-1 soon became 10-3 as both Bailey & Blackwell fell to identical dismissals, expertly caught off the side wall by Connor Hayman - as Rod Brazier earnt two more scalps to keep on the coattails on the leading wicket takers in the division. Despite some innings stabilising from Green and Cross (what a shame no 6 wasn't Code) Hayman was soon in catching action again, an excellent caught and bowled this time. 52-4. Last pair Cross & Bragg batted well to get the total up beyond 100, but both perished to brilliant catches - the first from Shaw, who took a superb caught and bowled chance, and the second from Hayman, his fourth in the innings, which must be some kind of record (cue checking history books) a one handed (left) grab from the final ball of the innings. Coggeshall 112 all out.
A tremendous display, and a seasons best. 3 wickets for Shaw, 4 catches and a wicket for Hayman, two more wickets for Brazier, and a meagre 11 runs from 3 overs from skipper Wright. Could we complete the job?
In short - no. For the first time in a long time, the top order were not able to lay the foundation for the run chase. Unusually, Ian Ball succumbed for 0, and once 0-1 had soon become 12-4, things looked far from rosy. Hayman & Shaw restored some pride, but to win from this position was too much of an ask against a side that admitted afterwards had performed the best they had all season with the ball. The innings finally closed on 48 - with that feeling of what might have been.
A fine effort against a top team for half the game - a positive to be gleaned from the match, despite no points being earnt. However, with two games to go, both against the teams below us in the table - the power, as Paddy McGuiness would tell us, is in our hands. Win those (or possibly just one) and we shall dine at the top table again next winter. And deservedly so.
