Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v East Hanningfield and Gt Burstead 2nd on Sat 25 May 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 79 runs
Match report
On an early summers day at Pheasant Park Woodham 2s hosted the undefeated East Hanningfield and Great Burstead 2nds. On winning the toss on a good looking batting wicket the visiting skipper decided to have a bowl.
So a third different opening pair, in as many games, this time Mickley joining Fannon. The early exchanges going to the bowling side with some accurate bowling only 23 scored in the first 10 overs. In the 11th over 9 runs came but also the wicket of Fannon a 32 opening stand. Mickley was the next to fall, Patel's 2nd wicket, with Cook and Clarke at the crease the score board barley moved by the end of the 17th with the score only on 34. Cook tried but failed to get the board moving slicing a catch to cover. Clarke was the next to fall, Patels 4th victim, and finished an excellent spell of 10 overs 4 for 17. With the score 38 for 4 Woodham needed a partnership C Collis joined Payne and started to score but the partnership only yielded 20 before Chris was bowled. 58 for 5 soon became 66 for 6 with Preston not picking Phipps slower ball and with Tom failing to work a straight ball to leg only to be trapped in front the score was now 78 for 7. Woodham now in desperate need for a partnership and it came in the form of Older and S Collis an excellent 60 runs were put on by the pair in just 11 overs with running plenty of ones and twos and even a three. With Sam in particular finding the boundary the score had moved to 138 before Steve was caught off the bowling of Wallis in the 40th. With 5 to go but only 2 wickets left the two Sams got the score past 150 a brilliant 47 ball 49 from Sam Older had got the team not only past 150 but given us some hope as well. Unfortunately no more runs were added for the 10th wicket and Woodham not quite able to see out the 45 overs but with a score to defend the mood was positive.
After a Collis tea it was the hosts turn to bowl.
The two Sams opened the attack and for the third game in a row kept the run rate to a minimum. Sam Norman bowling with good pace and movement swinging the ball into the right handers was the first to take a wicket a perfect in swinger trapping Hamilton in front. The pair only conceding 40 in there 20 overs a really good start the other opener becoming more frustrated with being unable to score was brilliantly run out by Jon Clarke. The change bowling of Preston and S Collis carried on from where the Sams left off giving very little away. Jack produced a brilliant ball to remove the opposition captain just as he was starting to get going, almost playing a shot a ball. With Flash getting number 3 Dawson lbw all resistance ceased with a massive collapse. After a really good spell from Preston. Payne was introduced to the attack with a very loose loosener called a no ball for height. Tom soon corrected his length bowling number 7 Wallis next ball to claim his 200th Woodham wicket after being stuck on 199 since the summer of 2016. Well done, Tom! His 201st was less of a wait the very next ball in fact well caught at mid wicket by Josh Love and before the over was done had claimed his 202nd. Meanwhile at the other end Flash was picking up wickets as well 4 in total after being 67 for 2 the visitors finished on 74 all out.
A fantastic effort in the field to bowl a team out for less than 100 on what looked to be a good batting pitch all 5 bowlers playing their part backed up by some really good fielding. All that being said the man of the match has to go to Sam Older a brilliant innings when all hope was nearly lost the innings and partnership with Steve Collis really shifted the momentum towards the home side and the bowlers took full advantage.
A great effort boys!
