Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Rayleigh 2nd on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 97 runs
Match report
And so there it is, after 18 weeks which seem to have flown by, the 2019 season drew to a close with a 67 run win over Rayleigh, which was not as comfortable as the margin of victory suggests.
Invited to bat on the furthest strip from the clubhouse, the 1’s, inspired by the heroics at Headingley were keen to emulate England. And so they did, as the top order, aided by some good bowling by Abley and Nunn reduced the hosts to 10-4 in the early exchanges. This soon became 22-5 and panic had begun to set in, both in the home changing room and in the clubhouse, as Charly was still only halfway through unloading the ten courses made for tea.
Finally though, a recovery, as the two keepers Nigel Costin and Andy Smith got together - the keepers union, or onion for some, giving the hosts some kind of foothold in the game - steering the total to 50 in the 15th over.
The pair continued to take the attack to the visitors and duly brought up their 50 partnership. Then, closing in on drinks, Andy picked out Frost in the covers to depart for 31, in an innings saving partnership of 63.
Undeterred, Nigel continued to prove a thorn in the Rayleigh side, and deservedly brought up his half century, a superb effort, steering the team out of some very choppy waters early on.
His vigil at the crease finally ended on 56, as guided a delivery from Castle to Gosling. 124-7.
18 apiece from Roger Marshall and Toby Pateman helped to boost the total further, but when Keith Mitchell was trapped in front, given by the speediest of fingers form umpire Manu, the innings closed on 162, not ideal, but far greater than it had looked we may muster after the start.
After a banquet at tea that would have made Henry VIII proud, a magnificent effort to close the season Charly (& Rog!) attention eventually turned to the run chase.
If the 1’s innings had started in domino mode, then so did the visitors, though they went one better, soon finding themselves 32-7 as Kev and Toby traded wickets evenly, as they battled it out to see who could achieve the most league wickets in a season. Starting the day on 24 apiece, the pair could not be split, as Toby’s wicket of Mayor made it four all on the day, Rayleigh 58-8 from 20 overs.
Resilience came from Kelly Castle, Essex Ladies skipper, who batted superbly throughout, defending resolutely and playing some sumptuous drives through the covers.
As the wickets fell around her, she grew in confidence, no more so then when batting with last man Nunn, who appeared at the crease following a wicket for George Verlander, taking a return catch for his first of the afternoon.
The champagne moment undoubtedly arrived via an audacious ramp shot, perfectly executed. Together with Nunn, who bore more than a passing resemblance to Jack Leach, there could not be another large last wicket stand could there?
Mercifully there was not, as not long after Castle had reached a deserved half century, she was trapped in front by GV, Rayleigh all out for 95 as the 1’s confirmed victory.
A good victory to round off the campaign, indebted to our wicket keeper pairing to help set a total that we could defend.
The win confirmed a fourth place for the 1’s, the highest finish since 1991, even the Premier League hadn’t been born.
Thanks to all that have played throughout the season, and contributed so much to the team, achieving both the league position and not to mention the run to the Village Cup Regional Final. Thanks also to all our supporters and of course Louise who has been there every step of the ways
Now it is time (for some) to put the feet up and recover, ahead of the Presentation Evening on 20 Sept.
Until then....
