Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Terling on Sat 18 May 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 93 runs
Match report
It was victory at the third time of asking as the 1's despatched Terling by an emphatic 93 run margin at Pheasant Park.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, the hosts, with the new opening partnership of Dan Smith and Andy Brown started tremendously, with the ball regularly being despatched to the fence with the first ten overs yielding 58. Dan made the most of the life that was given to him and proceeded to notch his second successive 50. The runs continued to flow and after just 15 overs, the score was 93-0, and a huge total looked on. A change in bowling to take pace off the ball did help to stem the flow just a little, and the run rate did start to slow as drinks approached. With Dan closing in on a century, and about to get a well earned break, it was a shame that Dawson got one through his defences, the opener departing for 86, a knock containing 19 fours. Still a hundred partnership for the opening wicket was an excellent platform. the 1's 119-1 at drinks and in a strong position. Manoj Tripathi joined Brown A at the crease and whilst runs were harder to come by with pace taken off and the field set back, no further wickets were lost. However, with the score just passing 150, 15 overs to go and plenty of firepower in the pavilion, Brown tried to up the run rate, but was bowled by Atkinson for a well made 38. Damian Abeyratna entered the fray and with just his third ball despatched Twin for a huge leg side 6. A couple of quick wickets, Manoj (15) and Jack Shipton (3) left the hosts 177-4, but with 8 overs remaining there were still plenty of overs to get to 200 and beyond. And how. Damian (37), another red inker for Nigel Costin (22) and Toby Pateman (22) helped to propel the score up to a very challenging 250-7 at the innings close - a fantastic effort and one that would test Terling.
The reply started well for the home side, as Wright trapped Twin in front third ball of the innings. Wilding and Taylor built a decent partnership, though when Toby got one to lift and find the edge of Wildings bat, safely pouched behind the sticks by keeper Costin, the visitors were 42-2, and going under the run rate. It was a three wicket spell for the skipper that helped to further check the run chase, as Dawson (15), Taylor (36) and Woolfenden (0) were removed in quick succession to leave the visitors reeling on 66-5 - and a long way from the victory target. Cullum countered, and together with visiting skipper Dawson put on a decent stand that was closing in on 50, until Roger Marshall, fresh from a good performance in the National Village Cup the week before, got one through Dawson - his first success of the afternoon. This was soon to be followed by a second, as Cullum's cameo came to an end, bowled when trying to force the ever increasing run rate. Harrison and the returning John Marshall had an energetic approach in chasing the total, and sought to run at every opportunity and for a period, it had the desired effect as the pair put on a quickfire 20. It was Roger again that broke the burgeoning partnership, bowling Harrison for 19 - victory getting closer for the home side. George Verlander joined the list of wicket takers by bowling Atkinson without score. One wicket left to take, Terling still 100 short. In the battle of Marshall v Marshall, it was Roger that came out on top, as John skied a delivery that brought a fine catch from Jack Shipton who covered ground from wide mid-off to claim the catch - and with it seal a superb 93 run victory.
Great to get off the mark with a league victory after coming so close last week, posting a hugely impressive total, then defending it very well - an excellent team performance against a strong Terling side.
It is on the road next week with a visit to Noak Hill, before the third round of the National Village Cup, away at Woolpit. Until next week...
