Terling v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 05 May 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts

Match report The 2018 season is off and running! Life in Division Two for the first time since 2000 started well for WMCC, who chalked up a good win at Terling.

With the Woodham wicket not quite ready for action, we were indebted to Terling to accommodate a switch in the fixture.

A typical early season wicket, given all the rain that we have had for what has seemed like months, meant that a low scoring game was always likely. The toss would prove key and it was - as the 'home' side that won it - Terling to bat. Runs were exceptionally hard to come by, the first ten overs yielding just 13 runs, with the skipper rolling off 5 maidens in a row to start the new campaign. John Marshall was first bowler to strike, trapping Wilding in front without score. Wright joined the action and lured Jagota into a nick, safely pouched at slip by Dan Smith.

A change in the bowling did not make the challenge any easier for Terling, as Roger Marshall (2-22) and Keith Mitchell (2-19) got to work. John later returned to secure a first five-fer for the season, picking up 5-22, as Terling were bowled out for 69 - only Taylor (16) and Dawson (14) getting to double figures.

Post tea, Rod Brazier and Toby Pateman were solid as the reply to the tricky run chase was given a solid foundation. The pair had chalked up 30 when Rod (10) was first to depart. Steady progress continued to be made to the target, with boundaries incredibly difficult to come by, (less than 10 were scored all match). However, as runs were being accumulated, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as 30-0 became 58-5. No need to worry, as Jack Shipton and Nigel Costin steadied the ship and made light work of the remaining runs required to complete a 5 wkt win.

A solid start, with a maximum 26 point haul to begin the new season with. Thanks again to Terling for hosting the fixture to enable it to be played and providing match teas.

Next week, the short trip to our fellow promoted side from last season - Rayleigh Fairview.
