Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Burnham Sports 2nd on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won By 10 wkts
Match report
A strong Woodham team, bolstered by 1st team opening bowler G. Verlander who was returning from injury, hosted a weakened Burnham this week looking to follow up last weeks convincing win with another one. The toss was won by the home team and skipper Brown elected to Bowl first.
An early wicket for Verlander who took a magnificent caught and bowled opportunity brought about the demise of G. Campion for just 5 and with J. Preston following up that wicket with one of his own, clean bowling G. Bayliss for a duck, the Woodham pups were in the ascendancy. This dominance was lost slightly as the unlucky Preston shelled catches off both batsmen, this meant that no further wickets fell before drinks but tight bowling meant that Burnham had only reached 54 after 22 overs.
With opener J. Young dropped again by Preston and No. 4 E. King also dropped, this time by S. "Flash" Collis the captain was starting to worry that today would not be his teams day. This was further backed up as a mix up with the two batsmen saw them both stranded in mid pitch, with G. Cook deciding to attempt to throw down the stumps at the other end rather than knocking the bails off at the end he was standing at bringing a run instead of another wicket, meant the wheels were starting to fall off. Thankfully this slide was stopped with 2 wickets in as many balls by the impressive Hayman. Unfortunately the Hatrick ball was a woeful wide down leg side but Woodham had now taken control of the game and this was confirmed when Hayman cleaned bowled E. King soon after. Little resistance was offered up by the Burnham tail with the final 6 batsmen offering up just 5 runs between them with 2 wickets in 2 balls for Collis and one for G. Cook adding to an eventual run out after Ball/Costin/Collis combined, this despite Collis almost deciding to return to his mark rather than effect the run out with both batsmen at the striking end meant that Burnham finished their innings on 64.
A splendid tea provided by P. Harness, complete with Pasta and sausage, a Potato salad, Pizza and an array of sandwiches meant that Harness has put himself in the running for best tea maiden of the year. Homemade cakes were lacking to still room for improvement though.
Having taken on more than their fair share of tea the Woodham opening Batsmen entered the fray determined to see the game off. A target of 65 off 59 overs was the ask and the openers I. Ball and A. Brown set about their duties with the tight bowling of R. Perrin the only blocker to the task. Both batsmen managed to combine a mixture of attacking flair and turgid defence to reach the required target of 17 overs.
Full points were eventually gained today to consolidate 3rd place, however a little wobble in the field proves that improvements can still be made. Next up Goresbrook away who have now won 2 straight wins and may prove a tougher test.
