Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Rayleigh 4th on Sat 06 May 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won By 5 wkts

Match report Woodham Pups opened their season in a new division and welcomed Rayleigh to the home of Pheasants and questionable cricket. The skipper won the toss and invited the away side to bat. After a brief photo shoot held by our resident Aussie, the real business was finally allowed to resume.

An early Wicket by Jack Preston got the Woodies off and running for the season however a frustrating partnership between opener Gosling and No. 3 Bumpus halted the Woodham early charge. This frustration lasted until the last ball before drinks when Gosling, looking set, dropped the ball to mid wicket where Preston swooped and threw down the stumps, running the unfortunate opener out for 33. The Drinks break had its desired effect for the Woodies as wickets fell regularly after the break. a superb low diving catch by new keeper Costin accounting for the perplexed Walker was quickly followed by a sharp caught and bowled by Cook and a well clutched catch by the chairMAN Ball off the bowling of Glasson soon put the Woodies on top. Another wicket a piece for the spin twins left Bumpus running out of partners, however, throughout all the turmoil at the other end he managed to make his way to a battling 5. A partnership between the new bat Patel and Bumpus started to unravel the brilliant Woodham fielding and bowling effort until Cook managed another 2 quick wickets to end the Rayleigh charge and leave them 179 for 9.

Well bowled Gavin Cook, figures of 10-2-39-4 well deserved.

After a great first tea of the season provided by Ian the Woodham openers of Brown and Glasson found the going tough with Glasson the fast to fall for a quick fire 11. This brought the Woodham chairMAN returning to the 2's to the crease, he managed to compile a composed 47 despite the wickets of Brown (11) and Hayman (6) falling around him although ably supported by debutant Costin. This composure seemed to unravel though as knowing he was nearing 50 he attempted a suicide run and was comfortably run out, suggestions of Jug avoidance were unfortunately unconfirmed. The run out brought about Cook to the crease who along with Costin continued the Woodham surge to victory, Costin passing 50 on his debut in fluent fashion the standout performer with the bat. Unfortunately once passing 50 he soon fell for 52, this brought Harness to the crease who along with Cook (27) finishing off the innings with 8 overs to spare

A good first win for the Pups following on from the end of season form from last year moves the winning run onto 8, next up, St Andrew's, promoted from Division 9 to Division 7, let the good times roll.
