Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Galleywood 1st on Sat 19 Aug 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 38 runs
Match report
The promotion champagne remains on ice as the 1's slipped to a 38 defeat at home to third placed Galleywood, as the achilles heel of a run chase proved to be the undoing of the hosts.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors got off to the worst possible start, losing a wicket to the first ball of the match, Wright finding the faintest edge of Adams bat, Gav Cook doing the rest behind the sticks.
Whilst further wickets did not immediately follow, neither did the runs, as overs and runs remained close to level pegging for the opening 10 overs.
The old adage of one bringing two certainly rung true, as following Mawby's departure for 17, a well judged catch by Jack Shipton at long-off, an inspired piece of fielding by Craig Marshall, who picked up and threw down the stumps from mid-wicket, accounted for opener Reeve (22).
George Verlander soon accounted for Rowlands (4) in another tight opening spell of 2-25 from 10 to create further inroads into the visitors top order. Galleywood skipper Rayner batted well, and though wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, two for Roger Marshall and one for Keith Mitchell, Rayner continued to occupy the crease, hitting a vital 50. He eventually fell for 59, another well judged catch from Jack, who also once again displayed his penchant for a run-out, with his direct hit helping to dismiss Blowers (11).
A couple of late blows from Claydon (15) took the score into the 160's, but the skipper claimed his wicket and maximum bowling points, Galleywood all out for 168 by the close.
After a splendid Manoj tea, the reply did not start quite in the fashion that the home side would have liked, Hicks swinging one back in to bowl Jack without score.
However, fuelled by his own culinary creation, Manoj, together with Biffta, looked in good touch as they progressed quite comfortably, putting on a fine stand of 50. A change of bowling brought immediate success, as Biffta (24) clipped Blowers behind square, where Adams, at the fourth time of asking clung on to a low catch. This dismissal signalled an all too familiar collapse, as 53-1 turned to 102-9 in 20 mid-innings overs, with Felton, Blowers and Storey collecting wickets.
Not for the first time this season, the 1's were indebted to a last wicket stand of merit that yielded an additional bonus point as Gav Cook and Keith Mitchell batted with assurance, confidence and nous. It would have taken an exceptional effort for the final pair to win the game, and so it proved, as the partnership was finally broken, Claydon inducing an edge from Gav to 'keeper Reeve for 15 - the 1's all out for 130.
A disappointing defeat, which sees the team drop back to 2nd, but the equation remains the same, one win from the final two games will secure promotion. The quest for that victory begins next week as we take our unbeaten away record to the splendour of Coronation Park, home of Springfield.
A note should go in congratulations to the 2's for their victory, with knocks of 75 from Nigel Costin, and an unbeaten century from some young buck called Brown. Well done gents.
Until next week....
