Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Springfield 3rd on Sat 24 Jun 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs
Match report
Doh! Despite another sparkling century from Dan Smith, the 1's suffered a second home defeat on the spin, surprisingly, but deservedly, to Springfield, falling 32 runs short of the required target.
Despite winning the toss and inserting the opposition, the home side were unusually generous in both bowling and fielding departments, giving the visitors too many opportunities to score and enabling Springfield's batsman to release pressure too often, particularly on the legside, where opener Jasani was particularly strong and proved a profitable area for him throughout his innings.
A couple of sharp slip catches taken by Manoj & Dan earned wickets for the skipper & GV respectively, but the partnership between Jasani (119*) and Williams (46) proved decisive with both occupying the crease for some time, giving the visitors a strong hold of the game. Roger eventually picked up the wicket of Williams, reward for his endeavours, but a late cameo from Kennedy (21) in support of Jasani, who went on to score an unbeaten century helped to propel the visitors score to 237-4 at the innings close.
After a fine Peggy tea, the run chase began well, as Rod & Smithy put on 37 for the first wicket, until a full toss, so often the scourge of the 1st innings, again proved decisive, with a simple return catch given to bowler Hartley.
Rod & Dan continued the good work, until post drinks break when groundhog day struck from last week's encounter with Galleywood, with a cluster of wickets falling - as 61-1 soon became 70-4. Whilst Jack helped to steady the ship(o) helping the hosts into three figures, he became the latest to get himself in and out holing out to Southwell. 117-5.
Unfortunately, the late order, all capable, have not yet shown what they can do with bat in hand this season. That pattern continued as Roger, Kev & John all fell cheaply with someone just needing to partner Dan who was going particularly well, and had brought up another fine 50 and was motoring towards three figures.
Thankfully, GV entered the fray and played an ideal supporting role, as despite 10 and over being required rate, with Dan in full flow and a short boundary on the clubhouse side on offer, anything could yet be possible. Dan brought up his century, a fourth of the season. However, suffering from cramp, it would really have to be boundaries that would get the 1's home. 50 were required from the final three overs, a really tall order. Finally, when on 110, and the score on 194, Dan fell, caught by Hartley in the deep off the bowling of Southwell to effectively end the improbable run chase. Peg & GV took the score beyond 200 for the extra bonus point, but the team fell 32 short.
A disappointing defeat, and barring one or two exceptions, the 1's were second best in all areas. With Rayleigh Fairview squeezing home narrowly at Great Baddow, the 1's drop to 2nd in the table, but are still well placed at this stage of the season.
Nevertheless something of a wake-up call and a kick up the backside that a team occasionally needs.
Expect that with the quality of the players a return to form for most will not be far away, and qhat better place to start than local rivals Purleigh next week!
