Hatfield Peveral 2 v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI on Sat 07 May 2016 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won conceded

Match report With the points already in the bag due to the unfortunate withdrawal of Hatfield Peverel first team the Woodham pups headed to Hatfield for a friendly match.

Having won the toss on a warm day the skipper decided to have a bowl and it soon paid dividends with the early wicket tacken by Sam Older, bowling J. Elfes with his first ball of the innings. This was almost followed by the dismissal of the other Hatfield opener L. Howe but a difficult low chance was shelled by the otherwise excellent Neil Cook off the bowling of Cameron Hayman. This drop was to prove crucial as the opener punished the Woodies with a big hitting 49. First change bowlers Gavin Cook and Jack Preston kept things tight in the middle overs taking 4 for 22 of 10 overs, 3 of these falling to the deceptively quick Jack. Next up was the young guns of Joel Older and Ribhu Tripathi. These two kept runs to a minimum with Ribhi bowling particularly well taking his first two league wickets for only 7 runs off 4 overs. This left the last two wickets for the returning openers to pick up and they fell to Sam Older who finished with figures of 3 for 17 off 6.1 overs.

The fielding and bowling display at the half way mark was very encouraging for the remaining season with excellent ground fielding backing up the tight bowling. Unfortunately this momentum was not carried into the batting. With the skipper hoping to see off the opening bowlers and then launch the attack he was unfortunately the last of 5 wickets to fall to them. A mixture of poor shots, low bounces and a questionable lbw decision (at least for Pinky anyway) the top order fell for a combined 14 runs. A quick fire 14 off 14 balls from Peter Harness gave the Woodies some hope but after going for another big shot down the ground he could only toe end another ball which kept low to mid on and all looked lost. This until a battling stand by Sam and Joel older and then Joel and Ribhu after Sam had departed, for a top score of the innings 20, brought some respectability to the innings. Woodham finally being bowled out for 86 leaving Ribhu stranded on 6 after the departure of Joel for 9.

A good fielding and bowling performance unfortunately not matched by the batting. The top order may need to take lessons from the lower order and show the same grit and determination as they did if we are to improve and take a win from Tillingham next week at the glorious if a little wet Pheasent Park
