Match report
The 1’s made the short trip to Broomfield, seeking to make it three wins on the bounce and complete their first double of the season. Winning the toss, the visitors elected to bat on a good looking track.
There was a change to the top of the order as a delicate Rod Brazier, feeling the effects of a night out with that impresario Andy Brown, akin to an evening with Alan Brazil, dropped to 3 with Manoj Tripathi moving up to open.
Over one almost brought Rod to the crease as Andy Smith offered a low chance to mid-off. Thankfully the chance was spurned. Undeterred, Andy continued in customary positive fashion smashing a quick 20. He was undone by an attempted short ball from Farrow that came off the pitch slower than anticipated, bowled for a score. 27-1.
Rod joined Manoj and took time to settle. He was soon seeking another partner as Manoj (16) succumbed to the identical earlier dismissal. This brought ‘Fidel’ Pateman to the crease, returning to these shores after a break in Cuba. The pair played well, with Toby in particular timing the ball well. A solid platform was formed and by the time the second drinks break was taken on another warm afternoon, the score had moved into three figures – 107-2 (Brazier 33, Pateman 34).
Seeking to push toward and beyond the 200 mark, Rod’s stay at the crease was eventually ended as Kugan took a catch at deep mid-off, Rod out for 42, recovering both the innings and hangover.
Toby continued, and duly brought up his first 50 for the ones, an excellent knock of control and elegant timing. The heat of the afternoon and scampering between the wickets that the enterprising Cookie brought on his arrival to the crease eventually caught up with Toby, who was bowled by Farrow for 62. 179-4 from 42. In the chase for 200 a late flurry of wickets fell, though Cookie remained undefeated on 37, as the innings closed on 194-7.
In response, despite one or two streaky shots from Butterfield, the home side scored a four an over for the first ten overs without too much trouble. Keith Mitchell entered the attack and had early success, bowling Butterfield for 30. This brought Farrow to the crease, who together with opening bat Turner, put an unusually off-colour bowling performance from the visitors to the sword. The pair produced an excellent partnership, running well between the wickets and putting away the bad ball, which unfortunately for the visitors was too often an occurrence.
Finally, just after the 100 partnership, the pair were separated, as run-getter Toby turned wicket taker, Turner finding Craig Marshall at point. After the second drinks break and into the final 15 overs, the visitors improved, with Craig and Toby bowling well, offering greater control.
With home skipper Eglin struggling to get going, the run rate started to slow, though the home side were still firm favourites. Toby struck again, trapping Eglin in front for 2. In hindsight keeping the home skipper at the crease may have been been favourable, as new man Baines was in positive mood from the off, providing just the foil that Farrow needed.
Finally, with 17 balls remaining, the home side deservedly got over the line to win by 7 wkts. An off-colour performance with the ball, though it must be said that batsman Turner and Farrow particularly, played exceptionally well.
A minor blip and we shall look to consolidate 5th place in the table and get back to winning ways when we entertain Noak Hill Tavereners at Pheasant Park next Saturday.
